Arthur Mathis Obituary

PETERBOROUGH - A good man died the other day. Arthur Lee Mathis was 70 years old on Aug. 27 when he passed away from an insidious disease, pancreatic cancer.

Art was an intellectual. His extensive educational background included studies at Harvard, Yale, and Columbia Universities, a Bachelor of Arts from Florida A&M University, a fellowship at Oberlin College, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Michigan. He was an ambitious author who worked tirelessly on yet to be published manuscripts. Art directed his writing to a young adult audience weaving themes of race, culture and socio-economic disadvantage. He enjoyed deep conversation that explored numerous historical and contemporary areas of thought. Art was also an avid sports enthusiast following the success and failures of the Beantown pros.

Art liked cuisine and was masterful at preparing barbecue, as many Peterborough people know from the annual Memorial Day Cookout that he hosted. It began years ago with five and last May entertained approximately 80 friends and family. He frequently enjoyed a meal and company at the Waterhouse Restaurant in Depot Square. Art loved a lobster, a glass of Louis Jadot Chardonnay, and a strong cup of coffee. He loved a good laugh and a stroll around town.

Art was a fine grandfather to two young people. He has three brothers, Julius of Atlanta, Ga., Jonathon of San Diego, Calif. and William who is deceased. Art was very devoted to his younger sister, Aussireta (Reta) Mathis of Miami, Fla. Reta made the arduous journey from Miami to be with Art during his final days and was by his side during the last moments. Reta reminded Art that being friendly with God was not such a bad thing.

Art's ashes were interred off the coast of Florida near Bimini by his family on Sep. 12.

Art's many friends are encouraged to celebrate his memory by attending a Memorial Day BBQ in his honor, May 2015, at the previously experienced location.
