Daniel Chamberlain Obituary

Daniel Richard "Dick" Chamberlain

Peterborough NH - Daniel Richard 'Dick' Chamberlain, 90, died after a brief illness, surrounded by his family, Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Monadnock Medical Center in Peterborough, NH.

He was born in Winchester, Mass., December 25, 1933 to the late Daniel Lewis Chamberlain and late Elizabeth (Manning) Chamberlain. He grew up in Reading, Mass., and graduated from Reading High School class of 1951.

After high school he attended University of Connecticut and then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956, earning the rank of Sergeant. After his military service, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Northeastern University in Boston.

Dick resided with his wife of 54 years, the late Joann (Crosby) Chamberlain, and five children in Framingham, Mass., for 24 years, before moving to Peterborough, in 1991. He lived a life dedicated to serving others, and during his time in Framingham he was employed as a sales engineer at Fenwal Incorporated. He was an active member of Plymouth Church, a leader for the Cub Scouts & Boy Scouts of America, and a coach for Framingham Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He and his wife Joann helped establish the local Juvenile Diabetes Foundation chapter.

In Peterborough, Dick was employed at F. M. Keefe Co., Inc. until his retirement at age of 84 in 2018. He was a member of Union Congregational Church, active in the choir and facility maintenance, and member of Peterborough Rotary Club. He served the senior citizen community by caring for, delivering meals, and driving friends to their appointments.

In addition to enjoying time with his family and friends, Dick enjoyed exploring various parts of the world. His travels with Joann included a trip across the Canadian Rockies via rail, several riverboat tours of Eastern and Western Europe, and the Middle East.

As a young father Dick played in adult hockey leagues, played softball with his sons on the Plymouth Rocks church team into his 50s, and then had been an avid golfer at the Monadnock Country Club and surrounding courses up to the age of 90. Along with his family, he was a passionate local sports fan, particularly the Red Sox and Patriots.

Dick greatly enjoyed his five children, twelve grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He is survived by: his sister Nancy Chamberlain Longval of Brunswick, Maine; his loving companion, Dorothy 'Dotty' Graham of Peterborough, NH; his niece Kerri (Longval) Bickford and nephew Glenn Longval.

His family includes daughter Judy Hauswald of Sioux Center, Iowa and her husband Brian, children Allison, Patrick, and Jon; daughter Betsy St. George of Henniker, NH, and her husband David and children Ryan and Conner; son David Chamberlain of Chelmsford, Mass., and his wife Maureen, children Matthew, Kelly and Jennifer; son Steven Chamberlain of Woodbine, MD, and his wife Christine, children Daniel and Julia; and son Brian Chamberlain of Natick, Mass., and his wife Kimberly, children Kyle and Stephanie. I´m back in Peterbourgh for a few weeks for work. I´m so sad I couldn´t be present for Dick´s service and to see all of you Chamberlain kids a few weeks ago. It really sunk in that he´s gone when I pulled into our neighborhood and his light was still on.

Your parents were such wonderful neighbors for so many years. I have fond memories of them frequenting our son Dave´s lemonade stands when he was young and of our afternoon visits when I´d drop off cookies each year for Christmas.

I was so happy for Dick when he and Dottie were able to spend so many wonderful years together as well. I loved seeing them in town at Depot Square concerts and elsewhere. And I loved when they stopped to talk with us when they were heading out in the car somewhere.

We were blessed with Dick´s friendship and to have him as a wonderful neighbor for almost 30 years. May he rest in peace.
