Richard Ozenich
Springfield, MA - Former Peterborough resident, Richard A. Ozenich, age 94, peacefully passed on September 16, 2025, after a brief illness. Born in Aliquippa, PA on February 20, 1931, to Andrew and Amelia (Begg) Ozenich, was lovingly known as "Ozzie" to family and "Dick" in maturity to his friends and all whom he met.
After graduation from Ambridge High in PA, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country beginning in 1948. He sailed on the USS Tidewater, with active duty in Korea and Japan and last assignments were at the shipyards in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Newport, Rhode Island. He entered civilian life in 1957. While in Portsmouth, Dick met Shirley Howe and they were married on May 15, 1954, in Dover, NH, and remained married for 71 years. Sadly, their love story ended with Shirley passing 21 days later, on October 8, 2025, but their love is eternal.
After completing naval service, he attended the University of New Hampshire on the GI Bill and graduated with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. That degree would lead to a lifelong career in the printing and converting industry.
That career started at Kidder Press in Dover NH, designing new roll-to-roll wide web printing presses for the paper and burgeoning flexible packaging industry. He relocated from Durham, to Peterborough, NH to work as Asst. Plant Manager at NCR. He later entered the sales arena selling printing ink in the offset printing industry for nine years. It would come full circle when Dick became sales manager for the renamed Kidder-Stacy Company of Agawam, MA. During this time, he would be an active member of the Flexographic Technical Association, contributing to the Association and writing the "Gearing" chapter of the Association's official publication "Modern Flexography". After Kidder-Stacy he partnered with the J.I. MacWilliam Co. of Newton, MA and enjoyed the later years of his career selling used printing and converting equipment domestically and internationally as well.
After retirement, Dick and Shirley traveled across the United States and enjoyed their homes in New Hampshire, Maine and Florida until relocating to Springfield, Massachusetts, where they were cared for by family until death.
Dick was a 60-year member of the American Legion, serving for many years as the Commander of Post 5 in Peterborough, NH. He also volunteered for the Lions Club International and the Boy Scouts of America in Peterborough. He served on the planning boards of several communities in Peterborough and Durham, NH and enjoyed being on the Marginal Way Committee in Ogunquit, Maine, as he loved the coast of Maine.
Dick was predeceased by his sister, Georgetta Hill, and his brother, Charles Ozenich. He is survived by one sister, Catherine Mihalic, of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, and extended family across the country. He is survived and cherished by his children, Kathi (Walter) Hoszkiewicz of Greenfield, NH, Mark Ozenich of Westfield, VT, Susan (Michael) Parent of Springfield, MA, Michael Ozenich of Goose Creek, SC and John Ozenich (fiance of Glendale, AZ. He was very proud of and loved by his five grandchildren, Erin Ozenich of Concord, NH, Gierek Hoszkiewicz of Nashua, NH, Krystian Hoszkiewicz of Peterborough, Andrew Parent of Houston, TX and Matthew Parent of Springfield, Massachusetts. He never met but truly adored his great-grandchildren, Henry and Nora Parent of Houston, TX.
A committal service with military honors for Dick blended with a committal service with reflection for Shirley will take place on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery Agawam, Massachusetts.
