Richard Quinn Obituary

Richard Joseph Quinn

Hancock, NH — Former Hancock NH native and owner of Maggie's in Peterborough NH, Richard Joseph Quinn, died on December 7, 2021 at a nursing home in Clarkdale AZ following a long period of ill health.

Dick Quinn, as he was known to many who knew him, was born on March 29, 1934 in Hancock, the son of Joseph Quinn and Agnes Ryan Quinn. He attended Hancock public school, and St. John's Preparatory School in Massachusetts.

Hancock resident Ernest Adams recalls sharing many activities and memories with his boyhood friend Dick Quinn. In winter, the two would often meet to climb Sheldon's Hill for some skiing, and then climb it again and again for yet another run down. In the fall, Adams recalls good times with Dick and his father at the Village Farm in Hancock, crushing apples and making sweet cider. In later years, the two would team up to make a batch of hard cider, bunging it in a barrel for cellar storage—and eager to sample the winey brew.

Following high school, Dick attended Villanova University in Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, he worked in Venezuela, Aruba, Australia, and Columbia. While in Aruba, he met Janet McClatchie who was teaching in a school for expatriate families. Married in October 1960 in Nyack, NY, the couple lived in various places, including Houston TX, before returning to Hancock in the 1980's, where they established a home in The Village Farm, then owned by Joseph Quinn.

During those same years, they bought a natural food store in Peterborough, renamed it

"Maggie's"and moved the store location to Main Street. Some local residents may recall the cheerful, tall man at Maggie's who was always willing to help them locate a particular food or vitamin supplement, or place a special order. Dick and his wife Janet sold the store in the mid 1990's, beginning then to think about retirement. After retirement, they lived part time in Sedona, AZ and in Hancock, moving full time to Sedona in 2010.

Richard is survived by his wife Janet Quinn of Sedona, AZ and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Virginia (Gina), Margaret (Peggy) and Catherine (Cathy).

Such beautiful memories of you and Janet in NYC and NH. Will never forget on the drive down 91 on a Sunday night back to the city from the farm....unbeknownst to us, you were right behind us. Irv was furious that someone was bumper sitting....then you passed us and waved. Great memories. Love you!
