William Hunter Obituary

PETERBOROUGH – William Bruce Hunter of Peterborough, died at the age of 74, Thursday, December 15, 2016 at the Community Hospice House, Merrimack, New Hampshire.

Bruce was born in Hyannis, Massachusetts, but spent the majority of his childhood in Southern California, where he met his wife, Susie, in the 7th grade. A loving husband of 50 years, Bruce and Susie raised two sons, Russell and Andrew. He was a devoted father, encouraging their pursuits with great pride. Whether as a brother, husband, father or grandfather, Bruce always knew the importance of family. He also prided himself as a role model and father figure to many young men who lovingly knew him as Bubba. Bruce built social community wherever he lived and will be remembered by his family and friends for his wonderful sense of humor, his loyalty and generosity.

Bruce was a third generation biologist, receiving his PhD in Zoology from the University of Rhode Island in 1974. He was in academics until 1978, when his family moved to Lincoln, Massachusetts. In the mid-eighties, he started his own environmental consulting company, Hunter, Inc. Bruce had amazing vision and energy. The success of his company enabled his retirement in Peterborough, where he had the time to pursue his creative passions. An artist at heart, Bruce spent much of his later years renovating historic buildings and working in his own wood shop. Some ten years ago, he began collecting W.W.I. artifacts. Motivated by his curiosity, intellect and his desire to share his knowledge with others, he assembled a remarkable collection of over 10,000 pieces. His "Arts of the Great War" collection was purchased in 2015 by the Pritzker Military Museum in Chicago, where others now have the opportunity to share in his respect for the "forgotten war".

Sincere thanks to the Elliot Hospital's GPU and the Community Hospice House for their compassion and understanding in dealing with Bruce's end stage dementia and for their caring for his family with respect and dignity.

Dear Susie, Russell and Andrew, Thank you for your call today. Such sad news that has, paradoxically, evoked such wonderful memories of the times spent with you and Bruce. Bruce was his own man, and a very special one, at that. You're right, it's difficult to grasp that at the time we met, you and Bruce were 24 and we were 16. You were both such positive role models - something still appreciated some 50 years later. That is a fine measure of a man. With our love, Alison & Peter Hess

Susie, I am sad to hear of Bruce's passing. Sending much love to you, Russell and Andrew. Bruce and I shared many adventures over the years and we made many memories that could give any Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn book a run for the money. I will always remember that boyish grin during many moments of laughter. Inside every moment a miracle is hiding for all of us to find. Rest in peace Bruce.

Bruce was a friend and fellow collector. We enjoyed each other's company and the many conversations revolving around WWI, a common passion. He will be missed, but glad to know that his collection lives on in Chicago. So, then does he.

Dear Susie, sending you love from Oregon. Bruce was such an amazing force. He lives in my memory as an upright man that had many stories and a boundless joy and curiosity. Valuable qualities indeed. He impressed me at Kate's wedding as he stood in as father of the bride. I know I have a photo in the archives. Love to you and go forth with the same zeal that Bruce would. -Christina

Dear Susie,
Bruce will certainly be missed around the theatre! We enjoyed his daily visits and his good-humored ribbing. He had a big heart and loved showing of your black lab. Our thoughts and prayers are with you now and always.

Susie,
Sending you big hugs. I enjoyed working with Bruce on his Great War collection and was thrilled to learn from him that he found the perfect home for it. He sure focused in on whatever it was that interested him, and then dug deep and wide. He told me he needed to get the collection out of the house and out altogether, that you had put up with enough of his collecting, and his projects over the years. An amazing couple. I am so, so sorry for your heartache, and this long shadow over you and your family's Christmas. Bruce always bragged about all of you.

Sending you warm thoughts that your memories will bring you comfort.

Warm Regards,
Annie Card
