Brian Simpson was my friend and law teacher.
As he researched his now famous book "Cannabalism and the Common Law" he shared behind the scenes adventures with his small class of 3rd year Legal History students. I remember photos of him grinning while aloft on the mast of a square rigged ship and his excitement at unearthing new material from the Public Records Office, that treasure trove of information.
After graduating I stayed in touch with him intermittently, visiting him at Darwin College in the University of Kent in the mid-80s and seeing him again some years later in Cambridge. A marvellous raconteur and a fine man who always took a personal interest in the success of his students.
He is sorely missed!

Brian Simpson was my law tutor in the early 1970s at Lincoln College, Oxford. A warm and lovely man who brought the driest subjects to life. I have very fond memories of his wit and erudition, and of his kindness to me. RIP

I held Professor Simpson in the highest regard. A warm and generous man, who was inspiring in his work and most supportive of others in theirs.

Prof Brian Simpson was extremely highly regarded in many parts of the world and he was a lovely man. A number of us in New Zealand who knew him send our condolences to his close friends and family in the UK, and to his former students in many, many countries.

I had Professor Simpson for Property Law in his last year at University of Michigan before his retirement, 2007-08. Far and away my favorite professor of all time. He brought in a toy stuffed red fox on the day we discussed Pierson v. Post and goofed around with it while talking about the case. I take the news, as he used to say, "with a warm towel and a bottle of gin."
