Adam Newlin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2025.

Adam Paul Newlin, born on July 22, 1963, in Santa Monica, California, passed away in Jasper, Indiana, on September 13, 2025, at the age of 62.

Adam grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and Port Jefferson, New York, where he graduated from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in 1981. One of his fondest memories from that time was a long-distance bike ride from Long Island to Canada with two of his closest friends-a trip that captured his early spirit of independence and adventure.

He briefly attended Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana before returning to Port Jefferson to pursue carpentry. What began as a job quickly became a lifelong craft. Adam developed a love for fine woodworking, particularly post-and-beam construction. He was a perfectionist in his work, and his talent was widely admired. Among his proudest achievements were renovating the home of a former Stony Brook University president; helping his parents to design their dream retirement home-a timber-frame home on the coast of Deer Isle, Maine, where he lived while building it for them; and designing and building his own workshop and home in Brooktondale, New York, where he moved in 1997.

Adam had a creative, quick-witted mind and sense of humor, and a love for music, especially Ithaca College radio station WICB, which was a daily companion in his workshop. Sunday mornings were often spent watching This Old House and New Yankee Workshop on PBS, and he was always looking for new ideas to inspire his craft which included building custom cabinets and furniture.

He was most proud, though, of his two sons, Cole and Sam. In their early years, he enjoyed playing games with them, teaching them to play Chess, spending time outdoors together, watching them wrestle for Ithaca High School, and taking them on trips to visit their grandparents in Deer Isle, Maine. Adam is remembered with tenderness for the joy he brought and shared with those who loved him-and for the skill, care, and craftsmanship he poured into everything he made.

Adam is survived by his beloved sons, Cole James Newlin and Samuel Paul Newlin, their mother, Gina Newlin and Cole's partner, Jennifer Willis; his sister, Molly Spalding, and her husband William; his brother, Josh Newlin, and his wife Joanna; four nephews, a niece, and a grandniece, as well as his mother, Sue Newlin. He was predeceased by his father, Paul Newlin.

A private remembrance will be held by the family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Adam's memory to Habitat for Humanity, or another non-profit supporting recovery through woodworking and other skilled trades.

I´m disheartened after reading about Adam´s passing. He was a very close friend in high school. We were brought together by our mutual friend, Tom Barron. I loved Adam´s wit. He was able to see the humor in a lot of things most of us took too seriously which helped lighten my spirit. I offer my sincerest condolences to Adam and his loved ones.

Very Sad to hear this. Adam was a good guy. We had some great times in band and running together back in the day. Gone far too soon. May his memory be a blessing.

I´m saddened to hear about the passing of my old chum Adam. We were practically inseparable from junior high on through high school. We bonded in junior high and high school band, where Adam played tenor sax and I played clarinet. He had a witheringly dry sense of humor he credited his dad for, and we enjoyed hilarious hijinks at the expense of the dictatorial band instructor. We both became interested in photography and I was amazed at his prowess for producing superb black and white prints in the darkroom. Our love of camping, and of getting free of our parents´ supervision, led us to start taking summer bike-camping trips, first to the southern fork of Long Island, followed by a more ambitious trip to upstate New York (Cooperstown) and finally, with another friend, an 1,100-mile sojourn to Canada and back. We returned to to a hero´s welcome as we rolled our bikes off the PJ ferry....a highlight of my life. Adam was fun-loving with a midwesterner´s sense of practicality that helped keep us out of trouble. We went our separate ways after high school but I never forgot his droll sense of humor - unmatched by any other. May he rest in peace.

Always smiling and good natured, I was fortunate enough to have Adam in my Woodworking courses at ELVHS. To find that he made use of his skill, furthering them to such a greater extent, now makes me smile, once again.
