Adam Schwartz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2023.
"Life's like a movie, write your own ending. Keep believing, keep

pretending. We've done just what we set out to do"

Adam Matthew Schwartz, age 41, passed peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, June 25, 2023 after a seven month battle with aggressive pancreatic cancer. Adam was born at Valley Hospital in the wee hours of July 5th, 1981, after a particularly hot and humid Independence Day in Glen Rock, NJ. Adam was a book lover, pop culture connoisseur, and a passionate fan of all things nerdy.

After attending Glen Rock High School, he went on to graduate from Clark University where he made some of his best friends. Adam spent several years working under the guidance of his friends and mentors at Career Press / New Page Books where he delighted in following his mom's footsteps into publishing. Adam served as an essential worker, reporting to his job at Stop & Shop every day during the scariest years of the pandemic, where he dutifully served as a bakery clerk, and, during the original wave of mask mandates, a supermarket bouncer.

Adam loved books, comic books, graphic novels, and the music of Jonathan Coulton, Paul & Storm, and They Might be Giants. He was a diehard fan of The Muppets, Doctor Who, science fiction, and superhero stories. He leaves behind an enormous storage unit filled with the comic books he started collecting as a kid, in addition to the books that covered every available inch of his apartment in Clifton.

From April onwards, Adam received wonderful care from the staff at Care One in Paramus, where he lived after he lost the ability to walk. After entering hospice care in June, his days were filled with visits from friends and family, as we shared favorite memories and laughs and sang Muppets and Fraggle songs on repeat.

Adam is survived by his sister, Bex, his father, Bob, and his stepmother Jill and stepsister Becky; as well as a slew of beloved cousins, aunts, uncles and cherished friends. Adam was extremely close with his mother, Leslie, who passed away in 2009.

Per his wishes, Adam would like to be remembered by the songs "Saying Goodbye" from the soundtrack to the motion picture The Muppets Take Manhattan and "Keep Me in Your Heart for a While" by Warren Zevon. He will be cremated and his remains will be scattered across Bergen and Passaic County, New Jersey.

Adam identified as a secular humanist, and his family will be holding a non-denominational open house with an online memorial service to come in the months ahead. We will always remember his kindness, thoughtfulness, and mastery of trivia from the profound to the inane.

So sorry to hear about Adam´s loss. My son Dan went to school with him at Glen Rock HS, and they were friends for many years before that, as I knew his late mother Leslie Schwartz well, too.

Adam was one of the sweetest, funniest, smartest people I've ever met. No one knew more about books or general excellent nerdery. Very sad to hear of his passing. Sending all my sympathy to his family and friends, and well wishes of peace and comfort.

Adam

Always a knowing smile...my first smiling memory of Adam. He was my student at Glen Rock High School. He taught me more than most. He was always happy to share a story, a bad pun, a serious question. He was one of the students who made each day of teaching a gift.
In my mind´s eye he is forever seventeen, forever questing, forever happy.
If there is a heaven I hope he saves me a seat.

To my sweet, kind, hilarious, mashed-potato-volcano making cousin Adam or "cousin Beard" as he was known to my kids, you sure are going to be missed! I wish for everyone to know that the strength that you showed over the last seventh months will inspire me forever. I will miss your sense of humor, your expertise on all things pop culture and your amazing capacity to remember even the smallest details of precious family stories. I know you said that what scared you the most about dying was no longer existing but I promise you, you will forever exist in all of our hearts. Also, I will stick to my promise to never ever buy a supermarket birthday cake. Wherever you are, I´m sure it´s somewhere awesome. Please tell your mom to give you a big hug from me. Love you!

Adam was a uniquely wonderful part of our family. Endlessly fascinating, extremely creative, and all around good guy. I always felt that he knew when I visited that I was bringing his beloved mother with me. As Leslie would say "a little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants!" We love you Adam.
