Adrian Farquharson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 20, 2024.
Adrian Ryan "Scotty" Farquharson passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2024 at the age of 97. He was born July 8, 1927 to William B. and Annie (nee McConnachie) Farquharson in Johnstone, Scotland, earning him the nickname Scotty. Scotty graduated from Gorton High School, Yonkers, NY in 1944. He also attended Manhattan College but began working as an insurance inspector for O'Hanlon Reports to support his growing family.

Scotty met Doris Joan Reyes while teaching ballroom dancing in Yonkers, NY. Three years later they were married. As Doris was eight years younger than Scotty, her father thought it was a bad idea, but they married anyway. During their 69-year marriage they had five children; Donna King, Robert (Dianna), James (Lori), Scott, and Kim Kelly (William). Scotty would laughingly say, "we finally figured out what we were doing wrong!" As the family grew, they moved from Yonkers to Spring Valley, NY and spent the past 56 years in Suffern, NY.

Scotty has eight grandchildren: Brionna and Raina King, Ian and Jack Farquharson, Timothy Farquharson, Deanna Campos, and William and Adrienne Kelly, his namesake. He is also blessed with two great grandchildren: Delilah Campos and Denina Campos. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Anne Farquharson.

Scotty loved to drive and did so until the age of 90. As an insurance inspector for many years he drove all over the Hudson Valley and truly became a human map. When not on the road he would be typing his reports at home. The clacking and ding of the old Underwood typewriter was a constant, comforting, presence in the home. After working into his fifties for O'Hanlon Reports, it folded, and Scotty had to start over. He bought the Mitchell Company around the age of 60 and retired as a self-employed insurance inspector.

If you knew Scotty, you could count on his wit and impeccable timing for funny or borderline inappropriate remarks. He never failed to bring a laugh. He was an avid reader of who-dun-its and enjoyed playing golf. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Giants, Rangers, and Mets and had hoped to see the Mets win one more World Series. He certainly gave them plenty of time!

Scotty and Doris owned a small house on the Long Island Sound in Connecticut from mid-1970s until 2019. The Sea Cliff was a cozy place on the water where they could relax, drink gin and tonics on the deck for happy hour, host family and friends, and make many fond memories. He had many friends "up the beach" whom he adored.

Scotty was a kindhearted man. He never wanted anyone to make a fuss over him and always put others before himself. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, Godfather and friend. We will all miss him reciting the Selkirk grace at Thanksgiving, "Some hae meat and canna eat, And some wad eat that want it, But we hae meat, and we can eat, Sae let the Lord be thankit."

A funeral service will be held at a later date. For those who wish to honor Scotty's memory, donations may be made to Victoria Acres Equine Facility, an organization whose therapeutic riding program has greatly helped his granddaughter, Adrienne.
