Al MacNeil

Norma and all the MacNeil Clan.....it was just an honor to have met Al and felt very privileged to have even had diner with him as I felt I was in the presence of Nova Scotia hockey royalty.....Al was very obliging when I approached him about the Night of Champions for Phoenix Youth where we had the 13 of the 18 people who had won the Stanley Cup from NS in 2013 in whatever capacity in the organizationn, and attended the Champions for Change event the following 3 years. I remember when the photo was taken in 2013 Al was the only one who wore white pants while everyone else wore black....Al said "Did I miss the email"....any way it was easy to pick Al out in the photo. He was such a gentleman as he never hesitated to say yes I will be there.....thank you Norma! I just wish someone wrote a book about his life in hockey. He was telling me about the group of pros that went over to the Soviet Union in 1969 to play a 6 game series, a prerequisite to the 72 series, where they won 5 of the 6 games.......this is hockey history that people should know.....just a wealth of hockey lore...you will be missed by all and I am very thankful to have had the opportunity....God Bless

I knew Al MacNeil when he was the General Manager of the Nova Scotia Voyageurs in the 1977-78 season. This was my first season as the radio play-by-play announcer for the club on CFDR in Dartmouth. Al was a legend then, and despite the fact he relinquished his coaching duties to concentrate on scouting obligations with the parent Montreal Canadiens, his impact on the A-H-L team was profound. He did everything humanely possible to help new player-coach Frank St. Marseille in a sometimes difficult and trying season. His leadership qualities and unselfishness really came to the fore that season. He also knew when to step in and gives the players a major jolt when needed. He was also kind to a young broadcaster learning the ropes, always referring to me as simply "KID". I can say, without reservation to this day, there is no one I respect more in hockey. Dear Norma and family and Vince and Dugga...memories of Al and Norma and the MacNeil family goes back into the 1950´s in New Victoria and New Waterford area and the old Sydney Forum,which has its own history that the MacNeils of the Shipyard ,Kay´s Cosy Corner,Jeff´s lunch and ROMEO MacNeil were all part of.. fond memories and later meeting Norma and Al in the airport numerous times on their way to Montreal and Calgary..always came over with friendly greetings..he was a fine gentleman and Norma a fine lady..it was an honor knowing all ..You never heard a bad word about Al...the Henri RICHARD THE EXCEPTION PERHAPS..BUT AL `WALKED TALL " through that minor skirmish...he was made of better `stuff´...he will be well remembered and not fotgotten by all whose lives he touched and there are many!!
