Alan Binkerd

Alan Cunningham-Dunbar Binkerd died peacefully in his home in Fort Myers, FL on March 4, 2025.

Alan, son of the late Alfred and Joan (Dunbar) Binkerd was born in Montclair, NJ August 26, 1946. He attended Greenwich High School and Taft Prep School. He attended the University of Arizona, where he joined Beta Theta Pi before joining the Army. He served honorably in the Vietnam War 1967-68 in the 11th Armored Cavalry, 2nd Battalion, H Company. He was overjoyed to connect with some of the men with whom he served almost fifty years later.

After the war, he continued his education at Northeastern University. He worked as a Respiratory Therapist at North Shore Medical Center for 34 years. He also worked providing home care for Eastern Pulmonary Services and private duty care on the side.

Although not a member, he was well known at the Palmer's Cove Yacht Club in Salem, MA, even gracing the cover of their newsletter sporting his lobster hat.

He retired in Fort Myers with his wife, Kate in 2011. There, he was president of the HOA for seven years. He enjoyed all things sports, his daily NYT games, walking at Lakes Park, grilling for friends and family, and filling any empty glasses he saw. His generosity, positive nature and wonderful sense of humor were at the heart of his many friendships over the years. He had a way of making anyone feel seen and heard.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen Mills of Fort Myers, FL, his former wife Deborah Farrell of Holden, MA, his father in-law and mother in-law Joseph and Mary McHugh of Fort Myers, FL,his daughter and her husband Alison and Nicholas Willnow of Holden, MA, his daughter in-law Farideh Fahoul of Vienna, VA, his stepson Sean Mills of Salem, MA, his stepson Ryan Mills of Salem, MA, his stepson and his wife Kyle Mills and Maggie Lakis of Methuen, MA, his sister and her husband Patricia and Pierre Jeanrenaud of Ramsgate, England, his sister Julia Binkerd of New York, NY, his sister and her husband Cynthia and James Selikoff of Orange City, FL, and his sister Marcia Binkerd of Raleigh, NC. He is predeceased by his son, Matthew Binkerd of Reston, VA. He is survived by many sisters in-law and brothers in-law, cousins, many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, grandnieces and grandnephews. His absence will be palpable to any who met him.

A private graveside ceremony will be held for family and immediate friends at a later date.
