News Death Notice

BLUME, Alan Eugene age 90 of Trotwood, passed away Wednesday May 7, 2008 at Covenant House. He was preceded in death by his parents Emma and Alexander Blume. Alan was a brilliant electrical engineer for 55 years. He is credited with 8 patents. He worked for General Electric for 25 years before moving to Dayton 35 years ago. He graduated from Yale before his 20th birthday. Alan served as a Naval officer in WWII, after which he earned two masters degrees from Union College in Schenectady. Alan was well read and knowledgeable about history, science, astronomy and the arts. In addition he was a great fan of early American jazz, an active ballroom dancer and lover of animals. He and his wife enjoyed cruising and sailed 28 times to various ports in the world. They also did pet therapy, bringing puppies from SICSA to visit residents at nursing homes. Alan was a member of the Duke Ellington Society, International Jazz Record Collectors, a life senior member of Electron and Electric Engineers (IEEE), Covenant House Guild and served as treasurer of the Big Band Boosters Club until it dissolved a few years ago. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Toby (Theodora) who loved him madly, daughter E. Sue Blume and her partner Diane Conti, sister Marian Galewitz, two nephews, family of friends and two old friends from Schenectady. A memorial service will be held at a later date. If desired memorial contributions may be made to the Covenant House Guild, Hospice of Dayton or the charity of your choice, BRADFORD - CONNELLY & GLICKLER FUNERAL HOME handling arrangements.
