Dear Renee, at the outset, please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of such a charismatic Alan. You do not know me, but your father-in-law Alex is related to my mum Celine Monis (nee Rasquinha) and she passed on the news to me..Since then, not a day has gone by, when I do not remember Alan and lift him in my prayers. He truly lived life to the fullest and is an inspiration to all...Infact even now when I look at the video of your nuptials when you sang during your wedding vows, I could see the love in his eyes and his smile. Just want you to know that he is watching you all from above and you have to be strong for your children....

Renee, please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. I had known Alan briefly during our overlap in graduate school, however; over the years we always chatted whenever we saw each other. I was shocked when news reached me and my first thoughts went to you and your kids. Knowing Alan, and from reading this guest book, you are a very strong, inspirational and uplifting individual which will undoubtedly help you and your children through this difficult time.

I went to high school with Allan but we were not particularly close. I can tell u though that from a distance I felt I might as well be close friends with him-- he gave off a happy, enlightened, energy that you do not see from many people. I wish i was closer to him. Over the years since, I am not surprised he has accomplished the many things he has. He was a stand up man and I give my whole heart to his family. I wish I could have been in Edmonton to express my sympathies in person.

Dear Renee and family, I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Alan's passing. When you spoke of your deep love and respect for him, I knew he was your companion for life. Unfortunately some live shorter lives on earth but all we can do is be thankful for the time we shared and journeyed with them. We were all blessed having known Alan! May God comfort all of you. Heaven has gained another 'Angel'. Remember him in your heart and he will always be there to comfort you.

Dearesr Renee, Gabriel, Anjali, Alex, Celine and family,
Alan was a pure diamond to both of us,to all in the Liturgy Council and Liturgy Committee,to all those who knew him in St. Charles Parish, and to those many friends, relations and students his life touched. To you all so near and dear to him, the diamond may be lost but its sparkle will forever glow in your hearts. May God`s love be a buffer against the forces of loss, anger, despair and intense pain that you are going through in these dark days. We pray the sparkle of that diamond sustain you in those moments of darkness.

Renee, it was not difficult to find words to describe your wonderful husband.....Godly, Loving, Uplifting, Sensitive, Wise (beyond his years), Courageous, Gentle, Passionate....we could go on and on!! We have been deeply saddened by the loss of Alan. We will miss his presence in the future but take comfort in knowing that his influence will long remain with us. We thank God for the privilege of knowing such an AMAZING human being. One quote that helped us when we lost my sister tragically was "Do not weep because it is over but smile because it happened". We remember when Renee's parents died and Alan became Renee's rock during that sad period. We remember Alan saying, "We choose to put our spouse's needs first…happiness is marrying your best friend..our marriage is based out of deep friendship and faith." We remember, the DeSilvas saying "the best gift they can give their children is to love each other. So they show affection and respect for each other in their presence. ..Their love for each other is just a glimpse of the love that God has for all his people." We remember Alan's full life, "Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Friend, Educator, Entrepreneur, Biologist, Scientist, Funnyman, Self-Empower-er, Mentor, Leader and Musician". We remember a

Nor by the number of its notes
Judge it by the richness of its contents
Sometimes those unfinished are among the most poignant…
Do not judge a song by its duration
Nor by the number of its notes
Judge it by the way it touches and lifts the soul
Sometimes those unfinished are among the most beautiful…
And when something has enriched your life
And when it's melody lingers on in your heart.
Is it unfinished?
Or is it endless? (author unknown)"

Renee, I was honored when you sang and played at my wedding in 2002, and again very grateful when you sang at my husbands funeral in 2008.
It will be a long and difficult road. Your beautiful children will be the reason you function for the first few months. And then the fog will lift.
I wish I could offer words of advice to get you through, something to make it easier, but there are none. One foot in front of another, one day at a time.
I am so very sorry. God bless.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Alan at the Castle Downs YMCA. There Alan was a life guard, swimming instructor and MOD. You knew immediately that you were in the presence of someone very special. Alan was genuinely kind, sincere, funny, brilliant, respectful and had a great love for his family. I remember a special day at the Y, Alan had planned a surprise party for his girl friend, now his wife, he was so excited it was contagious! All of us are so heart broken for your family. Speaking with so many of your Y friends we all feel very BLESSED that we all had the opportunity to meet such a beautiful human being! God Bless to you and your family!

As one of my first university professors, Alan showed me his good spirit and love of knowledge, inspiring me to view my education in a different way. Having him as a lab instructor in another class allowed me to get to know him a little more personally, he was always there to help even amidst his stacks of marking, working on his thesis and all the other great things he was involved in. He always wore a smile, was genuine, approachable, funny and kind. My heart aches for his family, a wonderful person has been lost, but his legacy lives on through the knowledge he has passed onto me and countless numbers of other students. May he always be remembered and watch over us all from a better place.

Alan was one of the best professors I have ever had. He was a genuine, caring person who really did make you feel good when you were in his presence. I will always remember how he would start our classes by asking "Whats gotten better since I seen you last?" and the best part was that he would actually sit and listen to us for a good couple minutes because he genuinely wanted to know. He definitely had a great impact on me, and will be greatly missed. I wish all the best to his family.
