Alan Durfee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2024.
Ocala - Alan Durfee, a beloved father, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on February 28, 1930, Alan was the cherished son of the late Franklin J. and Dorothy (McElhiney) Durfee. In 1950, Alan married Sarabelle McKay, also of Lakeland, Florida, who passed away in 2010. Alan and Sara were blessed with two children, Deborah and Lisa.

Alan graduated from Lakeland High School in 1948 and went on to earn a baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1952 with the support of his loving wife. His career spanned over four decades, the bulk of which was with RCA during which he made significant contributions in support of the NASA Space Program in communications engineering. He was cited for his support of the Department of Defense during the Apollo XI mission, the first manned lunar landing flight. He played an important role in flight safety with his work on the command destruct system and his engineering expertise was critical to the overall safety of rocket launches on the east coast from the the earliest days of space flight through the Apollo then Space Shuttle flights.

Alan enjoyed tinkering, building and repairing electronics, TVs, computers, redesigning things to work better than the original. He was a lifelong learner, constantly seeking knowledge and sharing his wisdom with others. He should have been a teacher, as his wife always said.

Alan is survived by his daughters, Deborah Menichino (Tom) and Lisa Donnelly (Kevin). He is also survived by his well-loved kitty, Snoopy, aka Goofy. He also leaves a dedicated group of CNAs/home health aides who cared for him so well in his final year including Claudette, Gaelle, Julie, and Alexandra, all of whom he was deeply appreciative of. Alan was also well supported by Hospice of Marion County, especially Lori, RN and Michael, MSW.

A memorial service will be held graveside at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lakeland, Florida where he will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude's Hospital or your local Hospice in Alan's memory. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Alan was a perfect neighbor. Always had time to chat, and maintained his place meticulously.

He sure loved his Scotty dogs.

He will be missed in Alamar Village.

remember `Mr Durfee´ from afar when I was 7, and played with daughter Lisa. Many, many years later, `Alan´, and I I had some great conversations about his engineering career at PAFB. Same charming man, two different perspectives! He truly was a life long learner, and passed that passion on to his daughters, so he leaves a wonderful legacy.

My condolences to Al's family and friend. Al occasionally visited the Grand Bahamas Command Destruct site when I was a wet-behind-the-ears site tech there in the early 1980s and he was always an enthusiastic, smart presence. I don't know if my memory is correct, but I think he mentioned that he had roomed with the astronaut John Young at Georgie Tech.

To Alan´s girls:

He was a lucky Shore Acres kid who everyone liked after having escaped Shore Acres to the relief of all to a new neighborhood and my bad influence. However, he never forgot the good times we had as kids and later high school together. You girls were lucky too!

From the distant past and another lucky Shore Acres kid,

Billy Ellsworth

Alan was the kind of man who made you feel like you belonged, no matter where you were or who you were with. He had a warmth about him that was impossible to ignore. He never treated anyone with anything less than respect, always valuing those around him. His laughter was contagious, and he had a way of telling stories that made you feel as if you were right there, living those moments with him.

He had a gift for making you feel loved and appreciated, like you mattered, even in the smallest of ways. Alan had this quiet, consistent way of checking in, making sure you were okay, and showing you that he cared. It was never a grand gesture; it was in the small, everyday things-his thoughtful words, his kind actions, his genuine interest in your well-being.

He made you feel like part of the family, always making an effort to connect, to reach out, to let you know you weren´t alone. Alan wasn´t just considerate; he was someone you could count on, someone who made the world a little brighter just by being in it. He will be missed may be rest In peace.
