Alan G. Hurlburt

Although you were a great teacher in Junior High, Mr. Hurlburt, no one could spark interest in me in Social Studies - sorry for that. But many, many years later our paths crossed again, Alan, and we became grown-up friends and you were able to help me in many ways - more than you can know. You scared me at first when we first reconnected because I wasn't sure where I knew you from until I was going through old yearbooks and I knew that distinct voice was from my previous teacher! You went out of your way to help others if you could! I pray the afterlife is much easier for you! Stay happy, joyous & free my ole friend!

In my 4 years at Westfield State, I felt Alan was the best offensive basketball player I ever played with. He was a scoring machine, with a picture perfect "jump shot." He also invented the Face Dribble. Heaven picked up a good player in Alan. God bless, Zook, 1963

Al is a great friend. We feel incredibly grateful to have known him so well during the last four months of his life. He was an awesome neighbor. In the short time that we knew him, he had a tremendous impact on our lives. We will never forget his smile and warmth. Missing you, Al!

The 55th Holyoke H.S. reunion (October 2012) afforded me the opportunity to renew my childhood friendship with Alan. In spite of a 50-year hiatus, we reconnected on many levels. Since then we have talked monthly on a wide range of topics—sports (especially football & basketball), politics, sports, adolescent experiences, sports, relationships, teaching, coaching, mentoring, resilience, and spirituality. I always looked forward to our conversations, and felt a strong, brotherly bond with Alan. Despite detours and missteps, Alan was committed to "righting the wrongs." His work in AA was an inspiration to many. Alan had planned to visit us in California, and it is with great sorrow that I lament the fact that he never made it. Alan was a great athlete, blessed with a curious, insightful mind; someone whose loving heart and caring soul impacted many throughout the years. We were teammates on the elementary playground, in the j.h.s. and h.s. gym, and especially teammates in confronting some of life's challenges. As Alan said in a recent birthday card, "We'll always be teammates." Rest in peace, teammate.

First met Allan when I was in Jr.High.A great teacher and good friend afterwards.He will be missed by many!!

With fond memories of times at BHS - Social Studies became real! I can't imagine how many lives he touched.

Mr. Hurlburt sparked my interest in history and that become the focus of my profession. May he rest in peace.

Dear Uncle Alan, I have such great memories of you when I was a young child. The summer David, Kathy and I spent at Grandma Hurlburt's house. You had David and I fill your tub up every morning and get you a news paper. And we did joyfully every morning. I loved spending christmas's and Easter there. Such fond memories. Sad to hear of the passing of your dad...Alan was a dear friend to my dad and I'm sure they are getting reconnected in heaven. Be at peace Alan!

We have many happy memories of Alan throughout our school years.The last time we saw him was at a high school reunion a couple of years ago and we had a wonderful visit. We hope that happy memories of your dad bring you peace and comfort.

Sorry for your loss. Alan was a very good friend of my Dad's. I met him thru his love of sports. He would come to many of my children's games and track meets.

It saddened me to learn of Alan's passing this week, a good friend to me and so many others. He certainly now is resting in the Lord's hand and is finally at peace. His legacy will live on in the recovery of so many he has helped over the years and he will be missed, but , remembered. We shall all meet again one day, rest in peace, friend.
