Alan KINDLER Obituary

Published by National Post on Jun. 13, 2015.
KINDLER, Alan Ronald
1942 - 2015
Passed away at his home in Toronto on June 12, 2015 following a two-year battle with cancer. He leaves in mourning his beloved wife, Rosalind Kindler; his two sons, Damian and Nicholas; his grandchildren Hannah, Noah, Sarah and Phoebe; two daughters-in- law, Jill Bodie and Helen Reeve, and his sister Mary-Lou. Alan grew up in Melbourne, Australia where he attended Scotch College followed by medical school at Melbourne University. Alan married Ros, his best friend and beloved partner of 50 years, in 1965. They spent three years in Rochester, New York while Alan completed his residency in psychiatry. Moving to Toronto in 1971, Alan began a long and successful career as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, which spanned over forty years. Alan's passion for his work was unparallelled. He taught and supervised at all the psychoanalytic training institutes in Toronto where he was a creative and innovative influence. He was highly esteemed in the psychoanalytic community and his influence extended into the US as well as internationally. His primary love was his clinical work and his devotion to his patients was such that he continued to see them almost right until the end. Alan was a lover of music and throughout his life had played a variety of instruments: clarinet, drums, classical guitar, ukulele, banjo and most recently, harmonica, which he loved to play along with Ros. They both learned to tap dance together. He enjoyed travelling, relaxing at the cottage, visiting loved ones in Australia, and spending time with Ros, his sons, daughters- in-law Helen and Jill, and his most cherished grandkids. The family will receive friends at Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre on Sunday, June 14, 2015 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. All friends are invited to a Reception to celebrate Alan's life directly after the Service.

Dear Al, those carefree days in the dungeon at PH ( I pinched him from Ros momentarily) rocking & rolling to The Beatles , his expertise in jiving was like no other, wonderful memories. A true gentleman, my deepest sympathy to Ros and family.

Rosalind and family
Alan's kindness, exquisite clarity of thought, and generosity distinguished him. He was a wonderful colleague for whom I had particular fondness and respect. We have truly lost a great friend of humanity.

Alan's voice, I feel, reflected the inner man whom we will remember -- gentle, supportive, unassuming, thoughtful and enfolding. He loved music and the music of his voice endures.

A great loss, I am forever touched for having met him. He was gifted with great skills as a therapist and human being. He would live through his legacy to many colleagues, students, patients and others. Thank you, Alan and rest in peace

He will be missed, but not forgotten by his family, patients and colleagues. What is most important, he made a difference as teacher, colleague and therapist.
Alan, may you now rest in eternal peace.

A special gentle soul, so kind and genuinely caring, he became a parent and a friend wrapped into one. I was fortunate to see him for over three decades.....but the sorrow and loss will last a lifetime.

Dr. Kindler as I knew him. Words are hard to describe the sense of loss I feel for his passing. He was selfless and helped me through my roughest times.
