Alan Moskin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 16 to Apr. 17, 2023.
Alan Moskin, a World War II infantry soldier who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and spent decades educating people on the Nazi Holocaust and his experiences, died peacefully on April 15, 2023, in Charleston South Carolina. His death on Saturday during Yom HaShoah, the international Holocaust Remembrance memorial ceremonies, seems preordained. He was 96.

Moskin was born in Englewood, New Jersey on May 30, 1926. He attended Syracuse University both before and after his military service in World War II and graduated in May 1948. He then attended New York University Law School, graduating with a J.D. degree in June 1951. He practiced law as a civil trial attorney in New Jersey for over 20 years and subsequently worked in the private business sector until he retired in 1991.

Alan was drafted into the military service at the age of 18 and served in the United States Army during World War II from September 1944 until August 1946. He was a member of the 66th infantry, 71st Division, part of General George Patton's 3rd Army. Alan's outfit fought in combat through France, Germany and Austria during which time he was promoted in rank from Private to Staff Sergeant.

On May 4, 1945, his Company participated in the liberation of the Gunskirchen Concentration Camp, a subcamp of Mauthausen. After the war ended, Alan continued to serve in Germany until June 1946 as a member of the U.S. Army of Occupation. He also attended the Nuremberg Trials.

In 1985 Alan began sharing his experiences in WWII, and only his death stopped him from talking about the Holocaust and preaching against inhumanity and for people to stay vigilant.

He has done video recordings at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City, for USC Shoah Foundation, and at the Holocaust Museum & Center for Tolerance and Education in Rockland County, New York. He has also participated in programs at the United States Military Academy, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, at the National WWII Museum, at the German International School in White Plains, on Russian and Spanish television, on the CBS radio network and on the documentaries "The Jewish Americans" and "G.I. Jews," both on the PBS television network, in addition to "Liberation Heroes: The Last Eyewitnesses" for USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Network. Alan Moskin is also known for The Jewish Americans (2008), I Danced for the Angel of Death - The Dr. Edith Eva Eger Story (2021) and 60 Minutes (2018). He has been profiled in Time Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, New Orleans Magazine, and innumerable other publications.

Alan has served as a Vice President on the Board of Trustees of the Holocaust Museum and Center for Tolerance and Education. He is also a past Commander of the Rockland / Orange District Council of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. In addition, in 2014 Alan was inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame and the following year he was elected by the Veterans Coordinating Council in Rockland County, N.Y. to be the "2016 Veteran of the Year."

Alan is survived by his daughter Jacqueline Moskin Corcoran and her husband Hugh, daughter Lisa Moskin, grandchildren: Rory Corcoran, Conor Corcoran, Molly Corcoran, Brody Tonon, Chase Tonon, Trevor Tonon, Cole Tonon, and former wife Christa Moskin.

Alan was a close and dear friend of my dad, Al Davis, who, with his fellow Rockland County Walter Lippmann JWV Post band of brothers, attended my dad's funeral in 2017. Their presence (and salute) was among the most moving parts of my dad's service for me. My dad frequently spoke of Alan and his efforts to educate children and others about the Holocaust. I called him a few years ago after having seen him interviewed on 60 Minutes to say hello and to let him know I saw him on the show. I shared how very grateful I was to him for the many years of friendship he shared with my dad. May your memory be for a blessing, Alan. My sincerest condolences to Alan's family.

I did not know Alan Moskin personally but heard him speak at the Holocaust Museum in Rockland County a couple of times. As a child of holocaust survivors, it was the first time I heard someone speak about the liberation of the death camps from another perspective. I was very moved by Mr. Moskin's words and could see how deeply he was affected, even so many years later, by the emotions he displayed. For the many survivors who were so severely traumatized they could not speak of the horrors they endured, Mr. Moskin was a strong voice ringing out so they would not be forgotten. He leaves a void that will not be easy to fill. May his memory be a blessing.

I have so many fond memories of Alan. He spoke at my university a couple of times and I cherish everything about my interaction with him. What an honor to sit with him and hear him talk not only about his experiences during the war but also his family. Oh, how he loved his family. A proud father and grandfather, smiling while he shared pictures and stories. I will miss him and remember him always. In my line of work I have had the opportunity to work with many speakers, but with Alan, I always held him close to my heart, and will continue to do so. My prayers are with his family.

What an outstanding person! I was so happy to learn about
his life. Yesterday I attended a Holocaust Remembrance program at at a synagogue in Durham, NC. John Wurzelmann was the program speaker. His father fought in WWII and lost most of his family members in concentration camps.
He met his wife, Sarah, in a camp for misplaced persons.

Mr. Moskin was an amazing veteran that spoke to my classes about the horrors of the Holocaust from the viewpoint of a US soldier. He answered questions and took the time to take selfies with my students year after year. We mailed him a signed group picture with a message from all of my students that attended and he was so touched he wanted to buy them pizza. I said his gift was sharing his insight. He also met our Girl Scouts at Veteran's Day events in Rockland County over the years. May he rest in peace. Not only did he help stop fascist governments, he enlightened generations after his service about the dangers of totalitarianism. He was a retired attorney. I was blessed to know him and wish his family and friends peace and hugs.

Our country is better because Alan served. He was beyond incredible. I love how he impacted school children with his stories of courage and heroism. What a blessing he was to all of us. Rest in Peace.

I was privileged to know a Living Legend in Alan for at least the past 10 years, earning a special place in my heart and soul. He humorously referred to me many times as "a young kid" when we were speaking at NJ and NY schools. When Alan showed me his Army recruit photo taken in 1944, the date on the reverse side exactly matched my late Mom's birthdate. That's when I realized our lives were spiritually intertwined, and he put me in touch with his beautiful daughters years ago. When I mentally asked Mom this morning to take care of Alan now and watch over him, my insides chilled within seconds followed by goosebumps. Wasn't sure if it was Mom or Alan visiting me today but the reassuring feeling was accompanied by love and serenity. Farewell, my friend, and Godspeed. You continue to be loved and adored by many! I am also proud to have Alan's name celebrated in the Acknowledgements of my book -- as he still inspires to this day. Condolences to Jacqueline, Lisa, and his grandkids and family. He was a gift to his family, our country, and our worlds too. -- Dr. Paul
