I am saddened to see this. Alan and Billie were among my most favorite people on earth. I traveled with them while Alan promoted Partners In Love, stayed with them in Charleston, dined with them during our honeymoon and visited Pawleys Island. Alan always offered loving and wise advice. He meant the world to me.

I am honored to have known my father's oldest and dearest friend for my entire life. Uncle Alan as I knew him was the most loving and caring person. He meant the world to my father, Kerry Luther. I'm sorry I didn't learn of his passing so I could attend the memorial. I send my love to his family.

On behalf of the congregation at Christ Episcopal Church in Shaker Heights, Ohio, please accept my condolences at Alan's death. There are a number of people at the parish who still remember Alan and his time as their eighth rector, with great fondness. May God comfort you during this time of loss and may Alan's soul rest in peace and rise in glory. Faithfully, The Rev. Peter Faass Rector Christ Church Shaker Heights

Alan had such a passion for justice and a great sense of humor. Alan and Billie were both so kind to me, both such wonderful, generous and caring people. Our connection survived long after my move away from Charleston, and I expect will survive long beyond this day. I am grateful to have known him.

Sincere condolences to the family of the Rev Alanson Houghton. We were friends and colleagues in ministries at Epiphany, NYC and the Hospital Chaplaincy Inc, NYC between 1959 and 1970, and one of his children and our son were born within weeks of each other. Alan did much for many and his life will long be remembered and honored

Fr. Houghton taught me the value of true leadership and how to serve with character. When my wife and I visited Hong Kong during 1992, he insisted that I meet with a member of his family. A great person has gone to be with the Lord.

Alan was my mentor and friend, opening up for me the humanity and spiritual depths of the priesthood. There are so many memories, but I think above all I remember and treasure his wonderful, sometimes winsomely naughty sense of humor. I've been blessed by his friendship, example and support and will miss him mightily.

A steadfast and courageous advocate for justice and inclusion in the Episcopal Church. His witness was an unexpected and much-needed gift to the church in the Lowcountry. May Light Perpetual sine upon Fr. Houghton.
