He was Abby in 1962. His humor was just part of what made a him fine companion on an epic ten-day cross-country backpack traverse of the Sierra from Crabtree trailhead to Green Lakes at Hwy 395.
I had my head down just going. I thought you guys knew what you were doing. Good Lord, Abby goes on, first you drop us 1,600 feet off the edge of a map, now youve got us lost in the crack between two maps. You didnt see a trail fork on our left? I ask. No, says Abby. Then he mumbles, I ought to listen to my mother more.
Our last night was below a snowdrift on an 11,600 ridge. I rolled a large rock out of the muck immediately above our sleeping bags and water seeps began filling the hole. Oh! Found the bed-springs said Albert. The snowdrift froze and our water-source was dry next morning whereupon Albert allowed that The loss of our bed-springs explains a lot about the uncomfortable night.

Albert was a great kid to know in High School. What a life after Sonora High he had. My widowed grandmother married a relative of Albert's family, Walter Savage. His cousin was Fred Bolter down in Keystone.
