Albert Louis (Al) died early Monday morning, April 21, 2008 at Morton General Hospital. He was born to Arthur D. and Nell Coburn in Eatonville, WA. Mr. Coburn was a fighter pilot during World War II and proudly flew a P38 aircraft. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Al was 88 years of age and spent the majority of his life in the Eatonville, Mineral Lake and Morton areas. He was a devoted father and husband, dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed.
After graduating from Eatonville High School, he served in the United States Air Force in WWII.
In 1949 he married Birdie Cooper. Together they raised four children, Nancy Jackson, Marilyn Anderson, Rand Coburn and Donna Coburn. He has seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Al was a true entrepreneur. He owned the Coburn and Son Mini-Mart in Mineral on Highway 7 from 1947-1973. In 1956 he purchased the Napa Auto Parts in Morton. He and his children have owned and operated the Napa stores in Gray's Harbor and Lewis County for over 50 years. Through the years he bought and remodeled homes, logged timber, raised cattle on his 80 acre farm where he built his present home in 1973.
Al was a devoted member of the local community, serving on the Board of the Morton Hospital Foundation. He was a charter member of the Mineral Lake Lions Club for over 50 years and was instrumental in helping to build and operate the campground. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and the Afifi Shrine temple. He was a member of the Grange nearly all of his life. He was a member of the Morton Methodist church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Marilyn S. Anderson and his brother Gerald Coburn.
Al is survived by his wife Birdetta G. Coburn, his children Nancy Jackson of Lakewood, Rand Coburn of Olympia and Donna B. Coburn of Chehalis, WA. As well as his 7 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, his sister Barbara Douglass of Vancouver, WA and brother Ray Coburn of Springfield, OR.
