I am sorry to hear that Al passed away this year. For some reason he popped into my head today and I googled him and found this. Al was my PhD co-advisor along with Lee Huntsman in the early 90's at UW. For about half of my PhD time I worked in Al's lab, and his smile and positive support were instrumental to me. I was the only grad student in the lab at that time, and Al always had time to answer my questions and support my work. I will always remember walking by his office where he would be sitting with a paper and a bag of baby carrots. It was an incredible experience to write a paper with Al, and I always chuckle that his seminal paper, Gordon, Huxley and Julian (1966) was published the year I was born. We would also talk ACC basketball quite a lot since he was a UNC fan and I went to Duke. He was a great man and a great mentor and although I haven't seen him in a number of years, I will miss him.
