Albert Haskell Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jan. 18, 2013.
Albert (Al) Haskell Oct 23, 1934 - Jan 14, 2013 HASKELL, Albert Raymond

October 23, 1934 - January 14, 2013

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Albert Haskell at his home in White Rock, BC. Farmer, Navigator & Pioneer in healthcare information technology were his life's focus. Albert grew up in rural Alberta on a farm just outside the small village of Dewberry. As a young adult, he dabbled in the mining industry in northern Canada. But his mathematical talents swayed him into the Canadian Air Force, where "Arctic" Al Haskell served as a navigator on a number of fighter jets behind his pilot and lifelong friend, Freddy Tuppling. During his air force career, which spanned the cold war, he met his future wife in Winnipeg and eventually they, along with their three children, moved and settled down in Edmonton where he earned a degree in Computer Science at University of Alberta. He spent many years leading the development of the hospital information system at the University hospital. In his later years, he happily returned to farming in the small town of Dewberry where he grew up. Always looking for a challenge, he developed the farm into a certified organic operation. Predeceased by mother Leontine, father Chris, brother Jim and wife Christa, he will be greatly missed by partner Joan Babb, sisters Faye Romanchuk & Patsy McGregor; son Ron Haskell (children - Adrienne, Geoffrey, Sonya, Heather, Elise & Krista); daughter Ramona Bavington (Greg with children - Matthew & Sarah); Janet Leduc (Laurence with children Jessica & Ryan), several great grand-children; aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, close friends and family. Memorial to be held 2 pm Sunday, January 20th in the Observatory, 15280 N. Bluff Rd, White Rock. If desired, donations to the Cdn Diabetes Association, Heart & Stroke Foundation, Cdn Mental Health Association, or your choice would be appreciated

I am deeply saddened to have very recently learned of Al's passing. I worked at the University Hospital at the beginning of my career in 1981 through to 1994. I got to know Al very early on and have very fond memories of the clandestine late Friday afternoon gatherings that stretched into the evening where Al taught us all the intricacies of "Arctic Crud". Those fun times still come up in conversation today. I also had the pleasure of working with Al as we planned his department's new space in the Clinical Sciences Building. When Al retired from his position at the UAH in 1993 he didn't go far and ended up running an IT project for the Canadian Red Cross. It was there that our paths crossed again when he hired me on after I had been laid off thanks to the healthcare cuts in Alberta in 1994. That allowed me to get back on my feet with a wife and very young children to support. While we parted ways not long after, I still ran into him from time to time over the years. I will never forget Al's humour, wisdom, calm demeanor and kindness. He definitely had an enduring impact on me and I will never forget him.

Just a note to thank everyone for all the very kind comments describing my brother Albert. Yes, he was the nicest man I ever knew......not to brag, but he was! I was so happy when his new gal Joan was initiated into our family.
When I was first introduced to Joan I asked Albert how things were going. He spoke in a very soft voice and said "Faye, I'm in a good space now". Thanks Joan for giving him peace and love. Albert, I miss you so much! Sister Faye

It was with great sadness that I read about Al's pasing. I was Al's assistant for the better part of 20 years. A better boss you will never find. I fondly remember the Friday Clam Chowder lunches at the Faculty Club. Al's second home!! Al was a compassionate man with a great sense of humor. We had a UAH Reunion a few years ago and Al was so pleased so many former staff attended - the smile never left his face all night - and that is how I will remember him. Rest in peace Al.

It goes without saying that I considered Albert a dear friend. I will miss him a lot. A kind dear man a humble soul packed with wisdom. His guidance and hands on help with the years I spent farming with Albert has shaped my view's considerably. We leave the best we can for our children and world at whole, that was Albert. Greatest sympathy for all that already miss this exemplary human being.

five years ago i met a wonderful man who changed my life and brought me happiness, Albert Haskell. We packed a lot into those years as we enjoyed dancing, dining out, traveling, watching t.v. and in the summers listening to the birds and the silence at the farm. I was fortunate to know his constant love, kindness and patience. Through Al I have grown to know and love the Haskell family their history and their stories. Al also introduced me to many wonderful friends who became my friends too. Thank you Al for your love, your loving arms and the memories. I will miss you and you will be in my heart forever. When time, Which steals our years away, Shall steal our pleasures too, The memories of the past will stay, And half our joys renew.

Albert was my darling brother ... we did a lot together .... had morning chats on the phone ... played pool ... had highly charged games of Scrabble .... annual visits on the family farm .. co-hosted wonderful friends & family events at the farm and at my place in Delta BC. He was one of the few people I could talk to about politics that did not make me feel stupid or did not try to bludgeon me into agreeing with his politics. I miss him terribly. He has left a hole in my heart. I am so grateful that we did so many things together ... we laughed a lot and shared so much about friends, family and life I am beginning to be comforted by the peaceful way he passed and the many many great times I had with him over many years - sharing stories (He helped with my Douglas College Course in "Stand Up Comedy" - a perfect collaborator!!). . Air hug to those who also thought he was a wonderful, charming man and will miss him so very much. Patti McGregor (nee Patsy Haskell) xoxo

Albert Haskell's IT legacy is still alive and well at the University of Alberta Hospital. We are still using a health care application that Albert pioneered many decades ago. The old time IT staff have very fond memories of Albert. I am a friend of Albert's son Ron.

Albert was our family friend of 50 years, Freddie's navigator in the RCAF and my father's best and loyal friend! Our thoughts and prayers go out to the extended Haskell clan with love and affection! Albert was a gem of a man and a wonderful "old soul". We will miss his humour, his kindness and compassion. He epitomized the very best of the RCAF lifer friendships to me. Auf Wiedersehen! Albert was a particularly considerate person. He was devoted to his children and grandchidren and very proud of them. He could dance the French Minuet, fix a combine, tell a good story and make an excellent omelet. His intelligence, wit and charm won him friends from all walks of life. He will be fondly remembered.

Had the pleasure of working at the old Unversity Hospital in Edmonton with Al. It was much to my surprise when I found out he knew my parents and that he grew up in Dewberry. I was raised on the north side of the river on a farm in the Heinsburg area. Always loved chatting with Al and especially liked his sense humour. He will be missed. RIP. Linda Nichols (Lloydminster)

Dear Faye,Patsy,Ron,Ramona&Janet,
Please accept out heartfelt condolensces. We were certainly shocked when Mom informed us of Albert's passing. In retrospect,I now realize that the past work that I have done for Albert at the farm house was also a prime opportunity to spend some time with Albert and to share family stories & recollections of our family bond. We are thinking of all of you in your time of need.
Sincerely,Calvin,Twyla & Bryn

To Albert's Family! We are so shocked and saddened by the loss of Albert. He was always a Dewberry person at heart and was so faithful at visiting around Dewberry where I met him at my sister's place, Donna and Laurie Durnin. I believe Albert, Jack Brock, Lois Nichols and Laurie Durnin all played in a band for many dances around the community. May all the wonderful memories you have with him console you at this very sad time.
