I am deeply saddened by the passing of my former principal and mentor, Mr. Hawkins. I attended Winfield Scott School #2 where Mr. Hawkins believed in me, encouraged me to become greater and provided the tools for me to succeed. I am forever grateful for this wonderful man and I am blessed to have had such a man help me along this journey of life to become successful. Thank you Mr. Hawkins and may you continue to rest in peace! -Ashlee A. Lynch

This is very difficult for me. There is not enough space to say what I want and need to say about this great giant of a manthis great Alpha Phi Alpha man. Both Mr. Hawkins and his predecessor the late great Berniece Davis were my Principals when I attended Winfield Scott School Number 2 in the mid-70s and early 80s in Elizabeth, NJ. They, along with my mother, Ellen Abdunafi and my father, the late Wakil Abdunafi, and all of my teachers (especially my 2nd and 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Lois P. Brown of Alpha Kappa Alpha) were the great champions of my elementary school education. Mr. Hawkins was like a father to me my whole life since graduating as the valedictorian of my 5th grade class, through the rest of my grade school and college years. He charged me with the duty and destiny to help others one day when I sat in his office during one of many visits to see him and my mentor-teachers. He said, I want you to help somebody. I spent the rest of my life doing my very best to help others. Today, I am still an educator wearing many hats and continuing to pay forward what he and others gave me. They put their spirit in me and I will forever be grateful that God blessed me with them as my teachers. I now put what you gave me into my 5 year old son, Sundiata, whom you have never met. I miss you so much. Thank you again for everything. Fraternally yours, your student, your son, friend and fraternity Brother, Winfield Scott School 2, Elizabeth, NJValedictorian, Class of 1980.
