I heard Tootie Heath decades ago at the Village Vanguard. This evening made me a jazz fan. Rest in peace, Tootie.

Piano man, Emmet Cohen, was booked into a room that is a designated listening room in the Minneapolis Metro. As it is with Emmet, he's engaging the masters who will play live with him on short road trips. In April of 2018, he wrangles Albert into coming to us and playing a couple of sets. I'm so grateful for the effort and the wonderful music we all saw that nigh. Tootie was in rare form, expounding, explaining, regaling us all with the truth of his life.
Emmet booked the show for April, and I'm sure he had no Idea what that occasionally means in Minnesota. Yup. Snow. Four to five inches of it. For some reason Emmet and Russell Hall were lodging apart from Tootie. He was downtown with no transportation. I volunteered, and after gaining local plaudits as to my reputation and able winter driver, we drove quiet evening streets to his downtown digs. "Tootie, what's your room number?" I asked as I escorted him through the snow to the hotel entrance. "I don't remember, on the second floor I think." Ah, I remember Tootie. He will be remembered always. My sincear condolences to all of Albert's family and friends.
