ALBERT LAMI Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 1 to Jul. 2, 2014.
LAMI
ALBERT
Of Friendship Village, formerly of Mt. Lebanon, on Monday, June 30, 2014. He was born in 1922 in Sutersville, PA and lived all his life in the Pittsburgh area. The son of Italian immigrants Ruggero and Gina Lami, he graduated from Monongahela High School in 1940, and then graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1943. He served in the US Navy 1943-1946 and is a World War II veteran. He returned home and received his Masters in Metallurgy in 1948 from the University of Pittsburgh. In October 1947, he married his sweetheart, LaVerne Pierallini of Belle Vernon, PA and recently celebrated 66 happy years of marriage. Albert's career in steel began as a metallurgist at Pittsburgh Steel in Monessen, PA in 1947. He was Assistant Works Manager during the building of the BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace). In 1970 he moved his family to Mt. Lebanon, PA when he became Manager of Purchasing and Raw Materials for Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel. He retired as Executive Vice President in 1978, and upon his retirement, took the position of Executive Vice President of Mesta Machines in Pittsburgh, PA and continued as a consultant for ten years. Albert loved golf as a member of Monongahela Valley Country Club and then for 45 years at Chartier's Country Club. He and LaVerne shared a very active retirement bicycling favorite local trails; Cedar Creek and the Youghiogheny. They enjoyed foreign travel, but more than anything enjoyed all things "Pittsburgh" as lifetime fans of the Steelers and Pitt football. They enjoyed attending Pittsburgh Public Theater, Pittsburgh Ballet, local museums and the Pittsburgh Zoo with their family. Albert and LaVerne Lami were wonderful hosts to their family and friends. Albert's mother was a wonderful traditional Northern-Italian cook and Albert continued the family tradition of preparing pastas, pesto, ravioli and gnocchi from scratch. He has passed on this tradition to his children and grandchildren. Family togetherness was always most important to him. Albert Lami is survived by his wife, LaVerne Lami; his son, Bart Lami and Nancy Jones of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter, Leslie Lami-Reed and husband, Bill Reed of Kalamazoo, MI; daughter, Suzan Lami and husband, Bob Grubb, of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter, Deanna Shapiro and Dave Shapiro of San Rafael, CA; their grandchildren and great-grandchildren are Lindsay and Alyssa (Stewart) Reed, Alex Grubb and Gina (Grubb) Fisher, Ben Shapiro, Max Grubb. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS. Friends welcome at 2828 Washington Rd., McMurray, PA (724-941-3211), on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Entombment services will be private. My Uncle Al Lami was one of the finest people I am ever likely to meet. He could not have been more gracious, supportive and kind in every moment…always taking time to make all feel welcomed and cared for. His advice and counsel were always timely and available. Our family was blessed to share his life with him and La Verne. He will be greatly missed by all.

Mr Lami was one of the finest men I've ever known. A great provider for his family and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. To everyone he met, an instant friend. They don't make people like him anymore. May his light continue to shine for decades to come.

Sympathies to Al's family. I worked closely with Al at "the Mesta" for a number of years.
A class gentleman.
