Al was one in a million and he was one of my favorite people on the planet. I´m sorry I didn´t get to see him after the pandemic began but I understood that he didn´t feel comfortable returning to the Latin Jazz ensemble when it eventually resumed. I was hoping to visit with him but it sadly didn´t happen. One of my favorite memories of Al was when he and Maggie came to a
party at our house in 2011 and Al hung his jacket on the branch of our Japanese maple. He was a mover and shaker in many things and a truly nice man. RIP

My heartfelt condolences to Al´s wife who I´ve never met. Al was a terrific guy, I ran the collective and he came almost every week for 20-30 years (maybe more) to play in the SOJ program. He will be missed for sure.

Sincerely,

Al was unique. A force for good and good things. I played with him in a Latin Jazz ensemble at The Collective School of Music. Al always brought in new and interesting charts he had written. As befitted his modesty, he usually shrugged off solo opportunities but was always in the pocket for the tune. When I got to know him and his many accomplishments I was filled with wonder and a little awe at how someone could be so accomplished across so many areas/disciplines, without any pretense or inflated sense of worth. May his memory be a blessing for all that knew him.

My deepest condolences. My parents, Les and Rita, were lucky enough to share many wonderful times with Al. May he rest peacefully.

My father, Dr. Les Wiener, had been close friends with Al since their days together at Chicago Medical School. My father passed a few months ago but always spoke fondly of Al Sutton and their lifelong friendship. I was even lucky enough to have met Al several times on my life. He will not soon be forgotten.
