Albert Tharp Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 22, 2025.
Albert G. Tharp, affectionately known as "Al" and "Pappy" passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 77 in Sumter, South Carolina. Born on January 3, 1948, in Camden, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Grover and Hannah Tharp. A longtime resident of Hagerstown, Maryland, Al lived a life dedicated to service, kindness, and family. Al enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country until 1969, when he was discharged after being injured. For his bravery and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart.

His dedication to his fellow veterans extended beyond his service. He devoted many years of his life to helping those who had also served by volunteering or supporting his local chapters of the VFW, DAV, and the American Legion.

Those who knew Al would describe him as a man of unwavering dignity and integrity. He was always willing to lend a hand and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. His personal motto, "happiness is a choice," was something he embodied daily, bringing joy and comfort to those around him. With the kindest soul and a heart full of love, Al made a lasting impact on countless lives.

Al was an avid reader and a passionate train collector. He was a long-time member of the Waynesboro Train Club in Greencastle, PA; here he formed lifelong friendships with fellow enthusiasts. Al was also a member of the Eastern Division Train Collectors Association.

A true "snowbird," Al and his beloved wife, Sue, spent their years traveling between Florida and Maryland, making treasured memories along the way. One of his happiest places was Big Bear Campground in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. Here he shared many joyful moments with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Al is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lorraine Sue Tharp. Together, they raised four devoted daughters who he lovingly called "his girls": Kimberly Sue Price (Elmer), Karen Sue Burkholder (Joseph), Kathy Sue Embly (Thomas), and Kristina Sue Tharp (fiancé Kevin). His legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Amanda Baker (Nathan), Kara Carter (Jason), Dustin Price, Savannah Creegan (Brendan), Miranda Murillo (Emmanuel), Kayla Erny, and Austin Jones; as well as his great-grandchildren: Lenna, Braylon, Brody, Wyatt, Karma, Carter, Piper, Maizy, Cannon, Owen, Brixtan, Aiden, and baby Leilani who is on the way.

Al is also survived by his step-mother Angie Tharp of Georgia, brothers; James Tharp (Barbara) of Florida and David Tharp (Rose) of Pennsylvania; his sister, Joyce Botchford (Hawley) of Florida; and numerous loved nieces and nephews who also carry his memory forward.

He will be interred at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery in Flintstone, Maryland.

Al's warmth, generosity, and his immense unwavering love for his wife, his family, and friends will be dearly missed but forever remembered. In his own words, "happiness is a choice," and his life was a testament to choosing joy, kindness, and love every day.
