I worked with Hal in the early 80’s. He taught me a great deal, and I thoroughly enjoyed our talks over coffee in the Texas City plant cafeteria. Hal was a class act!

I am just reading about Hal’s passing, He and my dad Joe Johnson worked together many years at Union Carbide in West Virginia. My dad passed away in 2021. He always spoke so highly of Hal and Hal always said good things about my dad. Hal reached out to me when my dad passed away with very kind words.
My condolences

I was a fellow radio operator and short-time roommate of Hal at Keesler until I was shipped out to Japan-Korea in June, 1954. I lost track of Hal until today when I found his obituary. Hal was everything described in his obituary and I am sure that you will miss him very much. My sincere sympathy. Doug Uthe, Sioux Falls, SD

Sandra, Ron, Karen and family, please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss. Hal was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. I got to know Hal while working with him on projects for Carbide that created some wonderful memories that I’ll never forget.
On some of my trips to Houston in July, I would stop at the Farmer’s Market in Charleston, buy 5 lb of half runners and carry them on the plane for Hal and Sandra. We played golf during some of Hal’s afternoon plant “site surveys”. He talked about his trout fishing trips to the High Sierra Mountains and the ones in Pocahontas county; playing ball with Carl Nutter and my brothers, Bud and Bill. In the spring I would email Hal pictures of the WV Redbuds in bloom. He was always very appreciative. As I was for being his friend.
Give Sandra a hug from Barb and I, and God Bless all of Hal’s family!

Hal was one of the engineering giants in the Analytical field in the Oil and Chemical Industry. As part of an old Analyzer guys group, we went hunting for dove every year, on opening day of the South zone in Texas. We have missed Hal, the last couple of years, but I will always remember Hal fondly. We stayed on the Frio River in houses and Hal was one of the stalwarts of that yearly trip. Quick sense of humor and abundant energy and the stories he would tell. Hal was a great shot, and he would walk through the field stirring up those doves for the rest of us and then come to find me, since he knew I did not have a limit and he already did. My Friend, you will be sorely missed. We will be thinking of you on opening day this year.

Hal and I shared a special friendship, we were both "Hillbillies!" We greeted each other by calling each other West Virginia names of small coal camp names like "Bergoo" or "Three Mile" and etc. I will miss his friendship.

It was such a privilege to get to know Hal. He always took the initiative to check on you, ask about my family and share great memories of Hamlin! Hal had a great heart for others and willingly shared the acquired wisdom of his journey. I’ll always be grateful for his life force.
