Alexander Duncan III Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2025.
Alexander G. "Alex" Duncan III, 75, of Tucson, passed away peacefully July 22, 2025, surrounded by his vigilant family after a long and brave battle with cancer. He was born December 6, 1949 to Alexander and Ruth Ann Duncan in Youngstown, Ohio, where he thrived in the Northeastern Ohio lifestyle and atmosphere.

An excellent athlete, he excelled as a baseball pitcher. A voracious reader and scholar he graduated from Ohio State University in Columbus with a degree in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. He went on to pursue a Law Degree from Case Western University School of Law in Cleveland.

Alex relocated to Tucson, where he did pro-bono work for Southern Arizona Legal Aid, and he served on the board of the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind. He later worked as a public defender for the Attorney General's office and went on to practice business law with a local law firm.

An avid fly-fisherman, he was one of the original founders of "Wrinkleneck," a group whose annual fly-fishing tournament in the White Mountains is in its 35th year. As a charitable organization, Wrinkleneck has generated funding for St. Mary's Burn Unit, Palo Verde Children's Hospital and Wounded Warriors.

In 2001, when a stroke halted his law career and changed his life. He called it "a stroke of luck," because for the next 25 years he lived his dream as an angler, golfer, outdoorsman and hobbyist. When Mary and Alex decided to spend their summers in Alpine, Arizona, they became an integral part of that community for more than 22 years-relishing life in the White Mountains.

Alex Duncan lived large. He was a big man with a booming voice, a wide grin, a huge laugh, a powerful handshake, and a big bearhug. He had an outgoing personality and a positive attitude, and he was a friend to all-a wonderful husband, father and grandad!

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Mary. He is also survived by his brother, Chuck Duncan (Patti), sister, Tish Duncan; daughters, Carrie Bardwell (Oliver), Bradie Schwerin (Chris), Kolby Moran; grandchildren, Aspen, Carson, Kieran, Brayden, Elliot; great-grandchildren, Beau, Charlie, Georgia; and many nieces, nephews and extended Sweeney family.

The family plans to honor his memory privately. He will be greatly missed.

Mary,
We had so many great time with you and Alex. Our heart breaks for your loss. He will always be with us, his big smile, his booming laugh and his love for you! We have a photo of when he went fly fishing with Jim and John in the Grand Canyon...making memories!

I feel very fortunate to have had Alex as my friend. He was a great guy. We shared so many great experiences. Solving the world problems in his garage on Thursdays, playing golf , or most of all fishing and camping in the White Mountains, it was always so much fun hanging with him. The conversation never got old. RIP

Dear Mary: I am so sorry to hear about Alex's passing. I know there has been a long time since we've talked, but I always valued your friendship. The many kind words about Alex make me regret not having known him because he valued everything that is important to me.
So very sorry:

Alex was truly "One of a Kind". Alex enjoyed life and was so much fun to be around. He made us laugh and enjoy our golf game even when it was terrible. Everything was "large" when we were with Alex. His smile, his laugh, his jokes, his stories, the fun. Everything was better when we were with Alex. I will miss you Alex, but I know you are in a better place. It was so great to see you at Ryan's Celebration of Life May 10. Thank you for coming. It meant a lot to Casey and me. Kim Holaway

What a wonderful tribute to such a great man who lived life to the fullest. Kudos for all the philanthropic work he did.

We only saw each other a handful of times. He always remembered my name and who I was connected with. He was charming and truely made me feel as though he was genuinely happy to see me again.

Mary, the two of you set up a wonderful life together. My heart goes out to you as you carry on without him. I will cover you in prayer.

Hugs,
Beckie Lee

Alex was a terrific person all around. He had a magnetic and big personality and the natural ability to lift up others. If you didn't like Alex, well then, there was something wrong with you. I regret not being in closer touch over the years. My condolences to Mary and the family.

My heart hurts hearing this news. My cousins were a big part of my childhood and we always looked up to Alex, being the oldest. Guess we will be looking a little higher to see you now. I am sure there were some great people waiting on you - say Hi to Uncle Al, Aunt Ruth and my parents. RIP Alex.
