ALEXANDER HAAGEN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 3 to May 4, 2011.
HAAGEN, ALEXANDER
June 1, 1919 - April 26, 2011
Born June 1, 1919 in Denver, Colorado to Alexander & Isabelle Haagen. Alexander passed away on April 26, 2011 in Beverly Hills at the age of 91.

After serving in the Merchant Marines during WWII, he entered the real estate business along with his devoted wife, Charlotte. For the next 60 years he became a leading force in the California real estate industry, building well over 100 shopping centers, many in underprivileged south central Los Angeles communities. He is credited with starting the National Buyer's Guide, which was a major real estate publication.

A friend and advisor to political figures, Alexander was appointed by Governor George Deukmejian to the Los Angeles Science & Industry Museum Commission, and appointed by Mayor Tom Bradley to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission where he served as president during the 1984 Olympics and for Pope John Paul II's first ever visit to Los Angeles.

Alexander enjoyed boating, collecting art, and spending time at home where he loved growing roses, orchids, fruits and vegetables in his gardens.

Charlotte, the love of his life for more than 60 years, preceded him in death in 2000.

He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, achievements and a loving family. His family includes his children; Alexander III (Betty), Charals (Dianna), Robert (deceased), grandchildren: Alex IV, Andrew, Autumn, Isabella and Charlotte, great grandchildren; Adam, Arielle and Gavyn.

He will be remembered lovingly in our hearts forever.

Memorial services to be held May 4th at 1:30 p.m. Wee Kirk O'the Heather Chapel at Forest Lawn Glendale, 1712 S. Glendale Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tower Cancer Research Foundation.

Our shopping center industry has lost a great man and a true legend. I will always be very grateful to have known "Senior" and for my friendship with him and all my other friends at the Haagen Company. We pray that his family takes comfort in knowing that he is now together again with Mrs. Haagen in Heaven. With deepest sympathies, Dave and Sue Weigel, Commercial Realty

I was blessed to be a Staff Accountant in your Company for 17+ years as well as your personal bookkeeper. Thank you for your trust in me all those years. Both You and Mrs Haagen became my family away from home ! You both hold a special place in my heart. The wisdom you shared and your gentle but firm ways guide me to this day. I will never forget you !
It brings a smile to my face to think of you and your girl walking side by side hand in hand again !

I have been blessed to have known and worked with a such a gentleman. Strong and kind in every way, leading his company to honorable and profitable ends. He furthered my career and taught me a small "piece of the business".

My deepest sympathy to all who will miss his smiling face and gentle ways.
