Alexander Houston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 20 to Dec. 21, 2022.
Alexander Houston, born in Kirkmichael Scotland on September 14, 1932, passed away on December 13, 2022, in Houston, Texas at age 90.

Alex was born to David Houston and Nellie (Campbell) Houston and raised in Scotland, the second of five children. Alex was the first in his family to attend college, graduating with a degree in Chemistry from the University of Glasgow.

After graduation, he emigrated to Canada for better opportunities, and then to New York City to work as a chemist. He decided to make the U.S. his permanent home, and was conscripted into the U.S. Army.

Following honorable discharge, he moved to Texas to attend the University of Texas at Austin for graduate studies in chemistry. Subsequently, he moved to Houston to work as a chemist in the petrochemical industry at Goodyear Tire & Rubber. Settling in Houston, he became a naturalized citizen, married, and had two children, Karen and Barbara.

Alex had a creative side, and spent his spare time researching and writing books and screenplays. He liked returning to Scotland for visits and cherished his Scottish roots and ancestry. He was an avid reader, especially interested in history and non-fiction, and had a sharp, intellectual mind.

He is survived by daughter Karen Houston Stopnicki, her husband Jack Stopnicki, three grandchildren: Ben Stopnicki, Cameron and Jenna Robbins, sister Lorna Storrie, and former wife Monetta Houston. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Christine Robbins, as well as his parents David and Nellie Houston, and siblings David Houston, Neil Houston and Mary Keighley-Lambert.

As requested by Alex, there will be no service and his cremated remains will be scattered at a meaningful location in Scotland.
