Along with just about everyone at the Vancouver Bridge Centre, I loved meeting Alex at the table - even when one of his intuitive bids resulted in a bad board he did it with such glee, one could only laugh. Coincidentally, looking through old photos only days ago I came upon one of Alex at the club - in the background to be sure, but there he was and I remembered once again what delight his presence brought. I think of Alex every Remembrance Day, decked out in his array of ribbons and so very proud of his service to this country. A rare man who deserves every accolade that comes his way.

Happy Birthday, Dad!
We're throwing you a memorial birthday party tonight!
BBQ lamb and lemon squares... your favourites...
And a big piece of Stilton cheese to finish off with, of course!
Your presence is still so strong in our lives.
I miss you so much.

Dear Dad,
I just heard about sweet Uncle Jack. Mark told me he had just finished his morning walk and was sitting gazing out the window when his heart stopped. I imagine the two of you have picked up where you left off--making the rounds, drinking coffee, being friends...
I think about you every single day.
Love, Jari

Dear Dad,
Guess what? There's no email in the middle of the forest, but I'm positive messages still get delivered and received.
Yesterday I was in the bush from sun up to sundown directing my new documentary and being consumed by Ontario blackflies. Got back to the hotel which had been hit by a blackout. Still no internet.
So this message is a day late being posted but I'm sure you got it all the many times I was thinking of you.
Happy Belated Birthday, Daddy.
I miss you so much.
All my love always,
Jari

It's Sunday morning--two weeks on the calendar and it's still an effort waking up to the realization that my Dad is not going to ring me up (much too early!) to ask if my sister, Zina, and I have decided yet when we want to go to China with him...
I would just like everyone to know how comforting it is to be able to read the expressions of condolence left here. Every thoughtfulness is like a bit of bread shared with us. Every remembered story a small white stone marking a path that leads us home...
I miss you, Daddy.

I will always remember Alex Bui-Bac (Uncle Alex) as someone who was all-knowing, full of wisdom and admirably confident. He was an anchor to my parents when they first immigrated to Canada and always remained a great adviser to them. He was incredibly gracious to our family and from my observance, with everyone he knew. I will miss his presence. Prayers of peace and comfort to Aunt Pat & family.

My name is Janneke Noort and I was the last person to play bridge with him at the Vancouver Bridge Club on the Friday before he died. Many times he would call me when he needed a bridge partner and I would never say no because it would mean a good few hours with him. He had an infectious personality and didn't know the meaning of growing old. Rest in peace dear Alex.

To The Louie Family,
On behalf of Rose Wong and family and Jim Sing Sr. family we wish to express our sincere condolences on the passing of Alex. My family had known Alex long before I was born but I have many memories of "Uncle" Alex from the Marco Polo and Le Kiu days. He was a generous, thoughtful and lively man and always took the time to have a conversation no matter how busy he was.
I know how much he treasured his family because he always mentioned the kids and grandkids and all the accomplishments they have achieved.
It was a pleasure to know such a wonderful man who will be greatly missed.

I know Alex from the Vancouver Bridge Centre. For lunch he would often bring a hug portion of chow mein that he was willing to share with me and many others. A few years ago I asked him if we would give a few of us a lesson on how to prepare this delicious dish. I suggested he give me a shopping list of ingredients but he was having none of that...it would be his treat and pleasure to share his joy of cooking with us. What awonderful afternoon we had chopping, and wokking and laughing with Alex.
I know he had great pride in his family, his heritage and his sevice to his country.
He truly was a special person and I feel privileged to have known him and will miss him dearly.

I will always have fond memories of my grade one pal Karen's Dad. I remember his delight in lighting up fireworks in the front yard at Halloween, or being treated to a show and dinner at the Marco Polo. What an honour to be able to meet up with him a few years ago to interview him for the Heroes Remember Project, in which Alex proclaimed, "I don't think anybody's life can be more happy than my life now."
He leaves a big hole. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs Louie, Karen, Mark, Jari, Xina and families.

Dearest Alex,
Our deepest condolences to your family and wife Pat. You were a great hero, mentor and dear friend to us over the years. We enjoyed your regular visits to our vegetable farm back in 1960. Our mom cooked lunch and we remember you and Pat loved picking radishes from our shed, rinsing them and popping them in your mouths. It was cute. Our family and co-workers would all laugh because it was so funny. We also miss your great Marco Polo restaurant food. It was a treat when our brother, Nelson Wong, took us to dine there after shopping at Le Kiu. We miss the good old times spent with you and Pat and your family. Rest in peace, dear Alex. You will always be loved and remembered.

Our deepest condolence to you, Pat and the family. Alex was my mentor, while I was studying in Australia, he offered me words of wisdom and encouragement. From his friendship with my Father Louie Bing Poy, I had the privilege of meeting Alex's brothers, Henry and Victor, and had spent time with them at Le Kiu and Marco Polo. I will for ever treasure those memories. May God bless you, Rest in Peace, Alex.

Wednesday at the Vancouver Bridge Centre won't be the same without Alex; he made every one of us feel special. What a gift! His sense of humour was infectious. About 3 years ago he shared a ride home from Penticton sitting between two of my bridge partners, both gorgeous women. When I kidded him later about falling asleep en route, he replied, "It was self-defense! They couldn't keep their hands off me." Rest in peace Alex

I run several duplicate bridge games in Vancouver and I can say without hesitation that he was loved by everyone. His sense of humour was wonderful and he always had a joke or smile for all of us. I was always delighted to see him come through the door. He'll be missed.

My sincere condolences to the Louie family as you/we grieve the loss of Alex. There are many anecdotes, but I attest to his exacting standards at ANAVET Pacific Unit 280's annual outdoor picnic where he displayed his mastery of the wok as he alone whipped up batches of beef fried noodles! Our comrades mourn his passing. Well done, Alex. Be at peace. Stand easy.

I wish that I had known Mr Louie. The legacy of his colourful over-flowing life was apparent in the documentary that was made about him and in the way in which his loving family always described him. The world is better when we have such people to emulate and celebrate.

Very sad to hear of Alex's passing. Over the years Alex was very kind to me and my friends as we started our lives after school. We lived next door to his family and over the years I often remember the many, many highlights involving Alex and the family.
More recently I would run into Alex regularly in Chinatown until the last few years. Always cheerful, I will miss seeing him.
My sympathy to Pat and the family and hope to see you soon.
