I enjoyed working with Dr. Stavrides or 14 years. He was a great teacher and was always inspiring us to move forward and update procedures. I can picture him walking the hall towards the Immunology Lab with his arms folded behind his back!!
Once we were suddenly short on personnel and I was beginning to get stressed. He made the decision to postpone our inoculating the fertilized eggs to test for influenza. The eggs sat in the incubator for a few days. One morning I walked into the lab and was greeted with "cheep, cheep" sounds. Yes, we had a small flock of chicks! We had a good laugh and then had to scramble to find food and then someone to take them in the dead of winter!!
I have great memories of your dad!! I am sorry I missed the funeral. I was visiting my daughter in Seattle.
My condolences.

My heartfelt condolences to the Stavrides family. Dr. Alexander Stavrides was a kind intellectual who shared his Microbiology expertise with me. Although this message is late because I was not in Pittsburgh, I would be remiss not to mention his outstanding leadership during my career at West Penn Hospital. His quest for knowledge inspired me.

On behalf of the department of Pathology of the University of Pittsburgh I am sending this message to express our sincere condolences for the loss of a wonderful colleague, friend and (for me) a compatriot. I will never forget his sound advice and his kind smile when I first moved to Pittsburgh. May his memory be eternal.
