Warm thoughts for the Scow family. Glenna was a good friend of mine from 79 to the early 90s; I hung out with her in Port Hardy, shared several evenings with her parents, hung out with Glenna when she was in Ladner, went to Glenna's wedding (soon after her dad died) -- and they spoke with a lot of love for Alfred. xoxoxo to Glenna's daughter, and to the whole wonderful Scow family. xoxooxox

My dear cousin Alf, I remember with fondness our early years in Vancouver. You showed this newbie the ropes of city life. I have always been so proud of your accomplishments in the legal field as well as in your personal life. Your quiet generous ways will be missed. Joan, may the memories and love you shared with Alf, bring you peace at this time. Much love to all of my Scow family.

The last time I saw Alfred was when he came here to Whistler with Joan and Tina Dion, to launch our "Learning and Leading with First Nations" program. His experience, wisdom and very good humour both grounded and inspired the emerging leaders. His legacy lives on the lives of so many.

Our family and our nation have suffered a great loss in the recent death of our beloved Judge Alfred Scow. We mourn and grieve Alf and his absence will leave us greatly bereft and the poorer for our loss. I especially send condolences and deepest sympathy to Alf's beloved Joan for whom her world and life will be difficult and painful at times but I know that she will triumph in the joy and beauty of the wonderful memories and great friendship that they forged and shared over the years. For anyone who knew Alf and Joan knew that they grew to be one and one = 2, and however, their love and respect for one another transformed them into a powerhouse of 1 (one)! Alf was a great man because he was righteous, he was honest, he was kind and generous and his brilliance lie in is humility and his sense of self worth that was not inflated with pomposity or a need to acquire power. Alf was a spiritual man and he deferred to a higher power and his life journey was a good one, a very good one because Alf was a man of peace and great wisdom who shared the power that he earned with those less fortunate than he. Alf's family was one whose destiny included much privilege and power and to his credit Alf never abused, misused or flaunted the wealth of his family's dynasty. I had the privilege of interviewing Alf for Kahtou a few years ago while he sat on the bench in New Westminister. Alf was in awe of his great father, the late Judge William Scow and I believe it was reciprocal. I know Alf's parents were so very proud of their son's numerous accomplishments and achievements, far too many to enumerate here. The best tribute that Alf could find to acknowledge his wonderful father was in the manner in which Alf chose his career and profession and of course the manner in which Alf chose to live his exciting life. Farewell my beloved cousin there are no words that can truly do justice to the man, the person and the judge that you were. You truly have earned an illustrious and permanent place in the annals of our history and we pay homage to you for all the greatness you have bestowed upon us. Rest in peace and bask in the love and greatness of family and friends whom you are now joined with in eternity.

Gilakasla Alf, Respectfully, Carole J. Dawson

Joan, Richard and I send our sincere condolences to you at this sad time. And I just have to share my brother Barry Scow's wonderful tribute with you. Here it is:
Remembering The Honourable, Alfred Scow...In a family, people, culture, country, there is always "One." They whom take the hero's journey outward, to come back, and share their gifts on their return. You were the One, Alfred. Hearing about your accomplishments, finally meeting you, having lunch together, I was struck with how gentle and kind and giving of yourself you were. In contrast, to your title as the first Native Judge, there were no airs about you. The rarest of qualities, may just being yourself, and that your were. That comes from the humility and wisdom of hard work and experience. You were the best man at my mother and father's wedding, you presided over my older brother Raymond's funeral, you married my sister Lorraine and her husband Rick, and Reiko and I...On the ground untravelled, by a severely oppressed people by the government such as ours, you had the courage and strength to take that journey....the hero's journey, Alfred, and we are all better off to follow in your footsteps, the path you took, the gifts you shared, for those of us who embark on their own journey's is a monument to you. The grace, kindness, humbleness of spirit, courage and grit, will be missed, but not forgotten...The next world, you have joined, is now better off....
Truly a beautiful tribute Barry...
Sincerely Lorraine and Richard Casey

We've lost a special Canadian. I first met Uncle Alf when he married my mother's sister, Joan. I remember him as a quiet presence at family gatherings, holding his own counsel. When he spoke, it was always worth listening. Our sympathies to those he left behind.

Alfred and Joan Scow were my neighbours on Pender Island. I am honoured to have know him. He was a very intelligent and dignified man. I so enjoyed his very dry sense of humour. You will be missed Alfred. My sincere condolences to his wife Joan...

I am the oldest daughter of Tom & Amy Dawson (nee Willie); my mom's mother was Emily Scow. Mom spoke highly of Alfred as being her family and a Judge, and so that passed on to me...I didn't know Alfred personally, although I would have like to, but I knew of him from my mom talking about him, and was proud to call him family myself. I believe our world is a better one because of Alfred, in all that he was able to accomplish in his life, and he makes for an awesome role model for the generations...RIP

I first met Judge Scow in the late 1950's and since then have continually held him in the highest regard.
He was not only a fine and gifted gentleman, he was a superb representative of First Nations across Canada and a wonderful representative of his Kwakwakawa nation.
He added quality to the lives of all who encountered him.

We will surely miss all the long talks and visits with you. We will always cherish our memories, staying with you on Pender, the boat rides you took my wife Helen and I on. It was an honour and a priviledge to do the videos we did together. I will miss our long talks on the phone, you staying at my home when you passed through or just visiting. Your room will always be here in my heart. You were an honest and decent man and I am proud to say I was your relative. Til we meet again Alf.
