Alice Kriz Obituary

Alice Kriz of Brattleboro, Vermont, passed away suddenly of a cardiac arrest on Monday, 12 August 2024. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Mitchell Warren, their son, Luke of Brooklyn, New York, and daughter, Sam of Brattleboro.
Born in New York City, Alice graduated from Georgetown University in 1986 and became the Executive Director of the French-American Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC, beginning a life-long career of building organizations and communities.
Shortly after their marriage in 1993, Alice and Mitchell moved to South Africa for his work in HIV prevention. Alice volunteered with a number of organizations, including on a pioneering video effort documenting the first democratic election in South Africa and the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as its first president. Both children were born in South Africa.
In 1998, the family relocated to London, before settling in Nyack, NY, in 2000. Alice helped build two local organizations, the Children's Shakespeare Theatre and Riverspace Arts. She then began a decade-long career managing marketing and special projects for Remains Lighting Company.
In 2017, Alice and Mitchell moved to Brattleboro. Alice served as a founding advisory board member of the Marlboro Studio School and volunteered at the Groundworks Collaborative.
Alice's life was marked by a spirit of adventure, love of travel, an uncanny sense of space and design, a passion for gardening, cooking, and welcoming friends and family to her home, with unforgettable hospitality. Her vibrant spirit touched the lives of family and a wide circle of friends, wherever she went.
In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her father, John Kriz; mother, Oriel Eaton; siblings, Michael (and Veronique), Lucy (and Tom) and Jennifer (and Bob).

I met Alice in a photography workshop in Johannesburg in 1994, after Nelson Mandela had become President and when she was pregnant with Luke. She wanted to be able to take beautiful pictures of her baby when he arrived! She was so warm, smart, vibrant and wonderfully witty. I hoped we would become friends and it was such a joy that we did. We spent such special times taking photographs, meeting for coffee and delighting in our shared stories, dreams and the beauty of everyday. I remember her bringing over a bottle of champagne when I moved into a new house in her neighbourhood and sitting with her and Warren drinking it under the Willow tree in my garden . But it didn´t matter how mundane the occasion. Alice turned any event into a celebration. I admired her creativity, energy, and devotion to Warren and their beautiful children. We had sadly lost contact for far too long, living our lives on different continents. I´m shocked and so very sad to learn of her sudden passing last year. Sending love and strength to Mitchell, and the children who must be young adults by now. And to all the family and friends who were blessed to know her.

Alice and I were part of the small group of new girl Juniors at Miss Porter's in 1979. Her quick dry whit and brilliance always stood out and I can remember that laugh! I love reading about her many wonderful, heart-felt accomplishments! What a sad and tough time for her family and friends, my condolences. A deep reminder that everyday matters and all the time shared with friends, family and volunteering are truly a blessing!

So sorry to hear of Alice´s passing. I was her uncle by marriage. She was a wonderful human, American, woman, lady . . . just wonderful in every way .
