Alice Olsen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 7, 2018.
Alice Louise
McDonald Olsen
1923 ~ 2018
Alice Louise McDonald Olsen was born April 2, 1923 at the Lewis home on 48th South in Holladay, Utah to Robert Bruce and Irona Louvisa Gundersen McDonald. She passed away Feb. 1, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah
There were nine children in the McDonald family: Robert Lloyd, Willard Annon, Ada Lerona, Thomas Bruce, Francis Glen, Legrand Gundersen, Ralph Casper, Harriet Iris and Alice Louise McDonald. Alice grew up in Holladay and the Cottonwood areas. Many happy days were spent at the "old Irving School" and at Granite High School.
At twelve years of age she learned to play jazz, popular, and classical piano and later the organ. Music was a grand and glorious time throughout her life. She made quite a few CD's for family and friends. She served an LDS mission to Norway. This experience set a pattern in the coming years to speak the language, sing and play Norwegian songs, prepare "Norske mat" and associate with former missionaries and friends.
Alice was employed by the County Clerk at the City and County Building for approximately 13 years, serving in many departments-as a secretary to the County Clerk, also in the Probate Department and mainly as Clerk to the Salt Lake County Commission for many years-taking minutes of their meetings and responding to the approved and denied applications.
She was actively engaged in writing family histories and was able to finish 3 books to share with the family. She loved taking pictures of Mt. Olympus in every season of the year and also wrote a book called Mt. Olympus (her favorite, most beautiful mountain in the Wasatch Range).
On February 5, 1951, Alice was married to Richard Lloyd Olsen and sealed to him in the Salt Lake Temple. They have three children: Kristine Louise, Richard Lloyd, and Robert Frans Olsen. Employment has caused moves to five different states, each one more exciting than the last, and finally ending up again in our 'old home town'.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Farm Hill LDS Ward located at 1250 Murray-Holladay Road, Holladay, Utah with a viewing prior from 9:00-10:45 a. m. at the church. Interment will be at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 East 4580 South, Salt Lake City, Utah. Share online condolences at www.jenkins-soffe.com.

Peter and I are sorry to hear that our friend Alice Olsen passed on. We were friends with Lloyd and Alice when they and their children lived in Folsom, CA back in 1978. We always enjoyed good times with them and their children. We kept in touch through Christmas cards. We will miss her cheery smiles and her notes. So happy Alice and Lloyd are together again. Kristy, Rick and Rob, may you find peace.

Alice and Lloyd were always very kind and loving of my parents. She completed a family history book of the McDonald family that my father, Ervin Stevenson McDonald had started but was unable to finish due to illness. My father, "Uncle Ervin" to Alice, was very appreciative that Alice would take the records that he had compiled and complete the book. My parents were always so delighted to visit with Lloyd and Alice. They offered incredible love and appreciation to Ervin and Ruby. When we moved to Utah, I was also appreciative of the loving bond that exists between cousins even when they hardly know each other. We will always love Alice.

Dear Kristy, Rick and Rob,

I thought your incredible mother would live forever--and she is, but she's moved on. You and your parents have always had a home filled with love and lots of positive energy--and I cherish all the lively conversations, amazing musical experiences and childhood memories living on Wander and Casto Lane. Your mother is always inspiring and beautiful. God Bless You always

Our dear friend and Cottonwood neighbor, We were raised in the best of times and in the best neighborhood. Remembering when you, Frannie Austin and Millie Fox would walk home from Irving Jr. High laughing and giggling all the way - i can just imagine the reunion you three and having now! We cherish the memory of Alice, the love she had for others, her musical talents, her ability to write. The last time I saw Alice was at the Holladay Cemetery and we both stood gazing at our beloved Mount Olympus and still enjoying the book you wrote. To your family, we give our love and sympathy as you will surely miss her.

So sorry to hear about Alice. We lived back to back with them about 20 years ago. They were great friends and a wonderful supporter to a single mom with four teenage children. We all loved her.

Just a few days ago I heard of Alice Olsen's passing. I knew her and her family when they lived in NJ some 45+ years ago. That seems like yesterday as well as a long time ago. No one could play the piano better than Alice. At that time we were all part of a small branch called the Martinsville Branch which required everyone to have multiple callings. She was always willing to serve and had a very cheery disposition about her that I remember so well. The other item I remember was that she was one of those regal spirits that everyone looked up to. I do not know how her health was in recent years, but I do remember seeing her about a year and a half ago at a NJ reunion. She hoped that my mother could have come, but with her approaching 98 and no longer able to leave the care facility it was not possible. I know my mother would have enjoyed chatting with Alice as they were very good friends. Now that shackels of mortality have been broken. All the best to Alice and her family left behind.

Alice was one of my best friends since I moved into the Murray area 18 years ago. She was one of the most positive ladies I have ever met. Her smile lit up my heart every time I saw her. She loved music so much and I have one of the CD's she made with her playing her little heart out on the piano. When she listened to music you could see how music delighted her soul. Every time I visited her, at home or at a care center, she would insist that I sing to her, especially Gospel hymns, and that lifted my spirits so much. I feel that a little piece of my heart is gone but I know that she is with her sweetheart, Lloyd, whom she dearly loved. She lived a long life and made the most of each day. If someone asked me to describe Alice, the words that I would use would be lovely, talented, kind, compassionate, eager to serve and full of joy. I will look forward to the day when I can see my friend again. Love you Alice -

I am so sorry to hear of Alice going home, because we all love her so much. I am thrilled for her and happy for her new opportunities. She will be greatly missed on this side of the veil. She was an elegant lady with talent, fun and love to go around. What a remarkable woman - so sweet and pure. Much love to the family. xo
