Alice Rivers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2025.
Alice Walsh Rivers, beloved wife, sister, cousin, veteran, and friend to all, went to meet our Lord on November 17, 2024. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Raymond, parents, Michael and Mary (Galvin) Walsh, and sister, Anne Walsh. She leaves behind many friends, Ray's children, grandchildren, great-grandson and many cousins.

Alice lived life with gusto and knew very few dull moments. She was born in Waterbury, CT on September 6, 1942, and grew up at 461 Homestead Ave. At an early age, she fell in love with baseball, Blackie's hot dogs, and sneaking cigarettes every once in a while.

For a short time, she was a door-to-door saleswoman, then later joined the Navy Reserves where she and Ray enjoyed temporary duty assignments both here in the U.S. and overseas. She used her GI Bill to complete her Master's in Education at the University of Hartford and spent most of her career as a special education teacher at Windsor High School.

Alice and Ray married in 1982 and spent their time traveling back and forth between Hartford, CT and Onset, MA, with the occasional stop at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, where she was able to gift 'free' Waterford Crystal to many of her loved ones. When Alice and Ray retired from teaching, they split their time between Onset and Punta Gorda, FL. In Onset, Alice and Ray spent most of their mornings on their front porch hosting trivia with friends and neighbors. Alice was an excellent listener and even better storyteller, especially coupled with Ray's input and sense of humor. She had a gift for making others feel seen and heard, and her infectious laughter and enthusiasm drew others to her circle.

Alice's heart belonged to the Boston Red Sox. She and Ray often hosted Wareham Gatemen and spent many summer hours at the baseball field.

Alice loved dancing and all things Irish. She was a devout Catholic, helpful neighbor and had a can-do attitude. Alice and Ray continued to live life to its fullest when they moved full time to Punta Gorda and continued to help many people in their community.

A memorial service for Alice and Ray will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wareham, MA on January 24, 2025, at 11:00 AM, followed by interment at 12:45 PM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the National Coast Guard Museum Association at https://cgmuseumassociation.org.

"May the road rise up to meet you, Alice. And may you always find joy in the game."
