Alice Ruth Elwin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 6, 2025.
Alice Ruth Elwin (née Valentine), affectionately known as "Ruthie," passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025, in Anderson, South Carolina, at the age of 76. Born on May 10, 1948, in Abbeville, South Carolina, Ruthie lived a life filled with love, creativity, and meaningful connections.

She attended J.S. Wright High School in Abbeville before earning her Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Her professional career was marked by dedication and excellence; she worked as an office manager for Dr. Harry K. Delcher and later as an operating room scheduler at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta.

Ruthie's life was enriched by her many passions and talents. A lover of books and writing, she often crafted heartfelt poems and stories. Her green thumb brought beauty to the world through her gardening and floral arrangements, while her skillful calligraphy added elegance to everything she touched. She found joy in music, dancing to its rhythms and sharing its magic with those around her.

Faith played an important role in Ruthie's life. She attended St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as St. Mary's Baptist Church in Due West, South Carolina, where she found spiritual nourishment and a sense of community.

Ruthie's family was the cornerstone of her life. She is survived by her daughter, Alissa Elwin; her son, Michael Valentine; four grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Harper and Margaret Thompson; as well as loving nieces, great-nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Elwin; her parents, James and Margaret Martin Valentine; one sister, Mildred Ryan; and two brothers, Benjamin James Brownlee and Larry Brownlee.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Due West Masonic Lodge 100, located at 4 Gordon St., Due West, South Carolina. Attendees are encouraged to wear bright and festive colors in honor of Ruthie's vibrant spirit.

May the memory of Alice Ruth "Ruthie" Elwin bring comfort to all who knew her and inspire us to live with the same authenticity and joy she so effortlessly shared.
