Alice Vannerson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2024.
Concord - Alice Huntington Vannerson, 93 of Concord, formerly of Sudbury, died peacefully on November 4, 2024 at Newbury Court where she had been living since 2005. Alice was born on February 22, 1931 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Catherine Bawden and David Hull Sherwood Huntington. She was a graduate of Bates College in 1953. Alice's early professional career included work in the Insurance business in Hartford, CT, and then in the 1970s and 1980s as an English teacher at Curtis Junior High School in Sudbury.

Alice will be missed by a large extended family, including sons Stephen and wife Sharron of Falmouth, MA; Stuart and wife Carol of Olympia, WA; grandchildren Timothy (Alexis) Vannerson of Spanaway WA, Scott Vannerson of Portland OR, Garrett Sylvia of Taos NM, and Kaitlin Sylvia of Austin TX; great-grandson Hendrix Vannerson of Spanaway WA; brother David Huntington of Peterborough NH, Sister Catherine Russell (Robb) of Winchester VA, brother-in-law Thomas McKenna of Wilmington DE, and many dear nieces and nephews. Alice joins close family in heaven, including Bob, her husband of 66 years; daughters Suzanne Sherwood Vannerson (1964) and Molly Sylvia (2013).

Alice was an active leader in her civic and spiritual communities, including the Sudbury League of Women Voters, Sudbury United Methodist Church, FISH, and New England Deaconess in Concord. Among many leadership roles at SUMC, Alice was Sunday School Superintendent, chaired Christian Education, made several missionary trips to Central America and she initiated the Stephen Ministry and led that program for over 20 years. In Concord, she volunteered in patient care at Emerson Hospital, and she chaired the new resident Welcoming Committee at Newbury Court for many years.

Alice's passions were being outdoors, traveling to faraway places, and affirming everyone and everything on this planet. She especially loved mountains, flowers, birds and digging in her gardens. Her ashes will be interred at Wadsworth Cemetery, Sudbury. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at the Newbury Court Chapel on March 22, 2025 at 1:00PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Newbury Court Staff Scholarship Fund (https://newburycourt.org/donate).

Alice and her husband, Bob, were pillars of the Sudbury community when my husband and I moved to Pine Street 26 years ago. Alice was a role model for me in parenting, community life, and overall welcoming kindness. In fact, I had so much respect for Alice and Bob and a few other SUMC leaders, that I chose to work in life enrichment at Newbury Court to continue to "pay back" some of their kindness and support. Thank you, Alice, for the example you set for me and my family. Blessings on your family. -Cindy Simon
