Allan Black Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Nov. 5, 2016.
Allan Patrick (Pat) Black July 1, 1924 - October 9, 2016 Passed away peacefully at VGH from complications following surgery for a fractured hip. He is predeceased by his wife, Babs, and sister Betty Black Stokvis; survived by sons Allan, Michael (Maureen), and John; granddaughters Sarah, Ellen, Alex, and Dani. Born and raised in Vancouver, Pat attended St. Michael's school in Victoria, BC before pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at UBC. Pat interrupted his studies to volunteer for the Canadian Armed Forces in 1944. After training in Petawawa, Ontario, Pat was transferred overseas where he eventually served in Belgium, Holland, and Germany. After World War II, Pat completed his studies at UBC and pursued opportunities in the chemical industry. Following his marriage to Babs in 1954, Pat took on positions that had him and the rest of the Black family move back and forth between Toronto and Vancouver. Once making a final move to the West Coast in 1968, Pat could fully pursue his love of sailing, fishing, and skiing, along with the beer, wine, and good food that often went along with these pastimes. After 10 years managing the paint department at Beaver Lumber in North Vancouver, Pat retired in 1987 which allowed him to spend his days sailing, reading, doing crosswords, keeping track of the stock market, making wine, gardening, travelling, watching his favourite TV shows and sporting events, and spending time with his grandchildren. Many who knew Pat will remember his intelligence, funny stories, and 'debating' skills with family and friends alike. The Black family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Sunrise of Vancouver for their compassionate care in the last years of Pat's life. A Celebration of Life for Pat will be held on Saturday November 12th at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, 3811 Point Grey Rd., from 1-5 pm. Presentation will commence at 2:00 pm.
