August 2010

Uncle Allan lived a fantastic and dangerous life before peacefully ending his days in White Rock, BC. In August 2010 he told me a little of his past stories:
From 1950-1954 Allan M.O.Greig was the Junior Assistant Planter for Dunlop Malayan Estates, Ltd., rubber tree estates in Melaka & Bahau in the State of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Allan managed a division of the Ladang Geddes Rubber Estate: the world's largest rubber tree estate for 'experimental blocks planting'. The British ran the estate employing Chinese workers. While on a patrol, Allan was actually shot at by Communist Rebels. "They missed", he told me.
Surviving the assasination attempt, he left for Africa. From 1954-1958 Allan was in Blantyre, Malawi (formerly Nyasaland) in east central Africa (part of the British Empire until 1964). BCA Hill (British Central Africa) suburb disctrict of Blantyre (founded by explorer Dr. Livingstone 1876 & named for his Scottish birthplace). Allan was a personal assistant to the general manager of the BCA owned tea & tobacco farms. Allan managed a tobacco estate for 5 months. "Mosquitos gave everyone malaria," he told me.
Despite being targeted by rebels and surviving African diseases, he was a jovial man, proud of his British heritage, whose colorful character will be missed. - Nephew Stephen Handley

Auntie Dodo, Michael, Nancy and Derek, I am so sad about your Dad. He was in such high spirits when I saw him in August and I'm glad I can remember him that way. I wish I could be there on Saturday to honor his memory. I will be thinking of you all from Maryland. Love to you all, Marianne
