Allan was a friend and schoolmate in the 1930's, living six city blocks away.
In 1938, at age nine, I lost my first boyhood pal when we moved, fortunately only two blocks from the Hay family. I now had Allan nearby --- and his little sister, Denise. Now, young boys have no use for pesky little girls, and Denise always seemed to be showing up, just like a bad penny. I regrettably realize how silly that was.
A nicer memory was Allan inviting me along for a Sunday car ride in their Model A Ford to the nearby town of St. Albert. That was a big deal those days for a kid from a family with no car.
I quickly learned how bright Allan was, when he always destroyed me in a word twisting game maybe called Annigrams. However, we boys did get the best of him when we gave him the nickname of "Straw". I think he understood.

Sad to hear of the loss of my childhood pal. We first met in the maternity ward of the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Our mothers were from the same neighborhood and became good friends. Allan was a gifted youngster. He may have started his teaching career giving me instructions on how to build a 15 cent Curtiss Robin airplane model. We were in grade school together (most notable memory was him clipping his finger nails at the next desk and aiming the cuttings at me). He was
always at the top of the class. When he
got an Edmonton Bulletin newspaper route at age 12 or 13 I became his helper. He gave me the route when he left for high school.
I went to another school so our relationship ended. Many years later my mother and I visited Allan's mother and
we were enthralled to hear of his fine
accomplishments. But hardly surprised.
My condolences to Margaret, Denise and the
family.
