Allan Jeans - RIP 13/7/2011
Condolences to Mary and families on the passing of a wonderful man. Effort was no problem to Allan - he was always caring and asked how the big fella was going when we had a chat! Always checking to see if he could help, even in those final months. Your lessons in life have been invaluable and you famous quotes not forgotten. We will miss our lunches Mary with you an Allan on you way home to Tocumwal - Finley

To the Jeans and Spence Families, thinking of you at this time. The Jeans family and my family go way back to Tocumwal, when Hilda and my mum Mary used to sit together at the local footy games, and not always as friends, when Finley and Toc played, it was classic entertainment !!
On behalf of Tom Kelly's family,we will remember Allan with wonderful memories, and the utmost respect. R.I.P.

As a Kid growing up in the 80's, it was just expected that the Mighty Hawks would be in the GF and would more than likely win it. As good as the players were, they would have been nothing if it wasn't for you Yabby.
RIP Yabby....If there is a Football Heaven up there, I know you will be the Coach. What a field of dreams that would be !

As a young boy standing over the fence at Glenferrie Oval watching training, a drop punt from Robertsons' boot smashed my nose. You walked over and placed your hand on my shoulder and smiled saying, "next time, keep yours eyes on the ball not your face." Twenty years later I told my son the greatest football coach told me those words as he held his nose after a game of local football. One man, little words, but forever remembered. Thanks Mr Jeans, thanks for everything.

Mr Jeans always had time for Hawk believers and as one who stood in the Glenferrie fog for many winters in the 1980s as part of the 'unofficial selection committee', his nods of acknowledgement, and his quiet chats with us over possible player selection showed his ability to coach not only the team but us as well. Farewell sir - it was a great pleasure to know you.

My memory of ALLAN JEANS.
I can recall, when working for the MCC, I stood with him in the doorway which lead out onto the ground in the old MCG Southern Stand and it was around 7pm, the day the mighty HAWKS had won the famous 1989 Grand Final by 1 goal or 6 points. Both sides kicked 21 Goals each for the day.
And Allan was just standing there on his own, gazing out to the ground and I said to him a 'penny for your thoughts' Allan?
And from memory, his reply went something like this I’ve just coached the last ever VFL Grand Final and the Winner and looking forward to coaching again next year and may coach the first AFL Grand Final and Winner of the newly formed AFL competition in 1990.
Leigh Matthews stole his thunder and won it with Collingwood in 1990, and Allan Jeans coached Lethal at Hawthorn, so Allan taught him well, particularly with what Lethal went on to do with the Brisbane Lions.
The atmosphere in the rooms after that 1989 Grand Final was just unbelievable, in particular the respect and the admiration shown to Allan by all of the Hawthorn Players.
Dipper was rushed off to hospital straight after the game with his Dad by his side and Dermie was still feeling crook from being dropped by Yeates when the first ball was bounced for the start of the game.
Allan a Great Man

For many years Allan Jeans gave the pre-game address to the MIDDWAY Cobras football team as we played our Grand Final in the Reclink competition. In 2006 the team was down by a few goals at half time when Allan arrived to give his address. We heard his passionate plea to play our role and to 'make up your mind' to give our all. We won the game by a few goals and players thanked Allan as he presented the medals. He refused the praise and instead praised each player for their efforts which turned the probable loss into an astonishing win. The MIDDWAY Cobras will never forget Allan Jeans. An inspirational man who richly gave so much to the least, the lost and the lonely of our community even when nobody was looking. - Submitted on behalf of the MIDDWAY Cobras Football Team

To have followed the Saints from a very young age and to have been old enough to see the Saints in the 60's we can only revere more the legacy that Allan has left behind. Maybe if he had been coach last year the ball may have bounced more kindly as it did for him back in 66. My fondest memory was as a youngster coming from the Moorabbin station and seeing Mr Jeans as I spoke to him. I expected much different when I enquired whether we would beat the Cats at Kardinia Park. He said it is always hard to win down there ( In his drawl style of speaking) but we will try our best. As I departed he said just remember son just do your best... he did not need to give me 5 minutes of his time but he did. I am sure that many others have similar stories. Thank you for giving us your best.Condolences to Mary and the family. RIP Allan.

Rest in peace Allen Jeans, football is poorer for your passing mate. I grew up in a Bombers family, and was a teenager in the 80's, those Essendon V Hawthorn games were as good as footy got for me, I remember it fondly. They were truly great and memorable days the 1980's for footy, and I miss them. I miss the Bombers Hawks clashes, and everything that came with them. God bless you Allan Jeans, from a Bomber with a long memory:)

A great man who learnt his skills as a Saint Man and sadly brought only one flag. Later with experience he coached the Hawks to many flags. He kept it simple and with the legendary Darrel Baldock the Saints had their best era. I just hope the current crop of players realise how dedicated those two gentleman were to get the only flag at SaintLand.
May he rest in peace - a great man, great communicator sadly missed but his memoirs will live eternally.

The first game of footy I went to felt very swanky because I had to wear a tie. Looking around the corporate box, I was aware that many of the old footballers in ties were actually bawdy beer-swilling yobbos. But over lunch, I sat next to a very quietly spoken and wise man who didn't seem like the others. He was kind to a young Nathan. Encouraging. Controlled. Measured. A gentleman. That man was Allan Jeans.
