Allan Lavoie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2015.
Allan John (AJ) Lavoie - January 15, 1943 - January 11, 2015 - Allan died peacefully Sunday evening listening to his favourite Jazz tunes at London Health Sciences Centre at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, Judith (Riddolls), his children Diana (Denis Coté), Jennifer (Pete Stroeder), John (Kelly Heslop) and four beloved grandchildren, Erika, Thomas, Lucas and Abby; sister-in-law Donna Murray and family; brother-in-law Paul Riddolls and family; and brother-in-law Phil Anderson and family. He is also survived by his extended Lavoie family members Madeleine Larose and her children Robert, Joanne, Michel and Louis; Patricia Stobbs and her children Jennifer and Greg; Lionel Lavoie (Carol) and their children Jeffrey (So Young Yun) and Barbara; Pilar Lavoie and her children James, Marco and Alexandre; Maurice Fleming (Teresa) and family; Kerry Erle (Frank) and family; Susan Skura and family; Jude Fleming; and Diane Carr and family. Predeceased by his mother, Elsie Amelia Wood; father, Louis Eric Lavoie; sister-in-law, Christine Anderson; and cousin Neil Lavoie.

A graduate of Montreal's Thomas D'Arcy McGee High School and Concordia University (Sir George Williams), Allan worked in operations and marketing at large companies including Alcan, Reader's Digest and the Bradford Exchange. Upon his retirement, he started a new vocation as AJ, host of a weekly Jazz show on CHRW called "All That Jazz", and as an on-stage host for local Jazz concerts and festivals where he could share his lifelong passion for Jazz. Allan raised his family in Pointe Claire before moving to London, Ontario. He was an ardent photographer, athlete (including baseball, football, hockey, cross-country skiing and scuba diving) and avid sports fan. He was a man who loved spending time with his family, exploring and dining in new destinations around the world, as well as creating culinary creations in the kitchen.

Services for Allan will held at the Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal in the spring, where he will be interred next to his mother, grandmother and aunt.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Allan's memory to the London Health Sciences Centre Foundation or to support live music in your community.

Dear Mrs. Lavoie, Diana, Jennifer and John,

I was very saddened to hear that Mr. Lavoie had passed away. Even though he told me to call him AJ when we bumped into each other at music events at Victoria Park (and in other places), he'll always be Mr. Lavoie to me. I heard about his passing last weekend when I was in Pointe-Claire and since then the memories of hockey, swimming and growing up on Tampico have come rushing back to mind. He was one of the cool parents and it was a priviledge to know him. I wish I had done a better job of keeping in touch as an adult.

He was one of a kind and he will be missed.

My sympathies to you and your families, may he rest in peace.

Dear Judith, Diana, Jennifer & John:
Saddened to hear of AJ's passing. We were regular 'fans' of
"All that Jazz"; and always impressed by AJ's knowledge ... both present & historical, of the music he so loved. He clearly loved his work, and the opportunity to promote musicians and the local jazz scene. AJ Lavoie was one of a kind, and his presence will be missed. May he Rest in Peace.
