Allan Little Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 10, 2016.
Allan Gray Little passed away on August 10, 2016 in Austin, TX at the age of 83. He was born in Rosebud, TX on November 21, 1932 to G B Little and Pauline Page. Allan grew up in Rosebud with one brother, Dwight. The family later moved to San Antonio, TX, where he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He attended Texas A&M for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1951 as a Private. Allan embarked on a successful 38 year career in the U.S. Army, rising from the rank of Private to the rank of Colonel. During his Army career, Allan served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, 2 tours in Republic of Korea, 4 tours in Germany, 2 tours in the Caribbean, and numerous posts in the United States. He earned numerous decorations and medals for his service including: The Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and several others. Allan also was very committed to the importance of education. Although he completed 1 year of college before enlisting in the Army, through hard work and commitment, he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business and Political Science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and a Master's Degree in Business and Government from Webster University in St. Louis. He also furthered his military education through such select training as the Officer's Candidate Course, the Transportation Officer Advanced Course, and the Command and General Staff College. Throughout his military career, Allan sought out and accepted increasing positions of responsibility, including command of a battalion, command of the 324th Support Group and service as the last Senior Aide-de-Camp to General of the Army Omar N. Bradley. However, he considered his most important role to lead and support his fellow soldiers. Through his Army service, he made many lifelong friends whom he considers to be family to him. Allan was first and foremost committed to his family, most of all to Lisa, his loving wife of 62 years. Allan met the lovely Lisa Ilse Fascher of Jeggel, Germany when he was stationed in Germany. Allan and Lisa were married December 24, 1954 in Echterdingen, Germany. He was a dedicated father to their 4 children: Bunny, Cathy, Allan Jr. and Thomas. As an Army family, Allan and Lisa and their children travelled to many parts of the world, expanding their knowledge of other cultures and people and forming many close friendships which continue to this day. As Allan and Lisa's children became adults and began careers and families of their own, they carried with them the values and principles that Allan instilled in them. Following Allan's example of the importance of education, all four children graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, so even though Allan started at Texas A&M and still loves to see the Aggie Band, he became an avid Longhorn supporter and was a fixture at UT football games. Upon Allan's retirement from the U.S. Army in 1989 after 38 dedicated years of service, he and Lisa settled in Austin, TX. Never one to rest or turn down a challenge, he embarked on a successful second career that lasted over 25 more years. He worked for the State of Texas and then as a consultant in the area of government contract procurement and execution. In that capacity, he worked in particular with numerous blind individuals in securing contracts for state and federal food service facilities. Allan made more wonderful friends through this work and had a positive impact on many people. Meanwhile, Allan and Lisa's family continued to grow to include the spouses of his children, 7 grandchildren, and grandchildren's spouses, all of whom Allan loved immensely and who have been enriched by having Allan in their lives. Allan is preceded in death by his parents, G B Little and Pauline Page Lisle and his brother, Dwight Page Little. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, daughter Bunny and son-in-law Ted Neible, daughter Cathy and son-in-law Glenn Lively, son Allan Jr. and daughter-in-law Sue Rostvold, and son Thomas. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren and their spouses: Kristen Lively and husband Jay Thames, Laura and husband Matthew Braun, Mark Lively, Helen Little, Clayton Little, Jacqueline Little and Sabrina Little. Allan will be laid to rest in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with a short Commitment Service at the cemetery on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 1:45 pm. A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate Allan's life on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 2:00 pm. Allan has been a blessing in the lives of his family and friends, and he will be very much missed. Col. Allan Little became my boss in USAREUR DCSLOG in Heidelberg, Germany the summer of 1983. He immediately conveyed a sincere and caring attitude for all those under his influence. He was in Heidelberg for only one year but became the best boss I have ever had. His stories of his time with Gen. Omar Bradley were filled with care and devotion. His commitment to the US Army and his family were inspiring. His ability to bring calm to unsettling situations was without peer.
Col Little was the most influential person I have ever met and it was a privilege to have been in his presence, if only for one year.

I just today (June 18th, 2019) saw COL Little's obit. I worked for him as a Major when he was Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics at 21st TAACOM at Panzer Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, Germany (1987 to 1988). He was a fine leader and friend; it was an honor

COL Little will always be remember by me and my family as a kind, caring and respectful man. He welcomed me into the 324th Support Group as his Legal NCO, looked after my family when I was attending training in the states while my family remained in Panama, and remained a friend throughout the years. My wife Carol remembers Lisa as being one of the most down to earth people she ever met and to this day comments on her welcoming all wives of the unit to her home. COL Little was by far one of the most influential people in my life.

If there is such a thing as a little giant, he was! Didn't get to associate with him much in Hawthorne Junior High School, but I remember one time he asked a few of us after school to go across the street to see where he lived- above a 2 story laundry building. It had shutdown for the day and had set the burglar alarm trip wires. It was dark in the plant and one of us must have touched one because after we got upstairs to his apartment, here come the Security service checking for burglars and there was a fee for false alarms!
After jr high Allan went to Jefferson High and I went to Brackenridge High. Many years later after I graduated from Texas A&M I found a newspaper article listing all the San Antonio students going to A&M starting in Sept 1950. There was Alan Little along with some others I had gone to school with at Hawthorne. Maybe if Allan would have stayed longer at A&M we might have met again. But once an Aggie, always an Aggie! With the "Aggie Spirit we'll nare forget" he was meritorious, distinguished, giving, instructional, caring; you can go on and on. Well done Allan! Rest in Peace, we'll be there soon! Dick Randall

I first met Colonel Little in Frankfurt, GE. He became my mentor and he and Lisa became our friends. After I retired, he and Lisa were there to greet us in Austin, TX. I will always remember that smile of his. I was honored to have met him.

We will always remember Allan as a warm-hearted, lovable, humorous and very intelligent man. Unfortunately we could only spend little time together when we visited Cousin Lisa in Texas. Allan drove us around and showed us so many nice places in Texas. Every morning he prepared a delicious breakfast for us. He made us laugh all day with his great sense of humour and all his funny German words. We admire him for his work with devotion and how he cared for all people. It was always nice to read his e-mails with all the latest updates on family life. Allan, we will miss you so much. we extend our deepest sympathy specially to Lisa and to all members of the Little Family - you can be very proud of him. You are in our thoughts and we hope your wonderful memories will sustain you.

To the Little Family:
I was fortunate to have known Allan Little, your father. He loved Germany, where I spent my childhood and youth, and we had many good conversations as neighbors on Anaqua Drive. We will all miss him. Our condolences go to Bunny and Kathy, whom we know, and to the entire family especially Lisa.

In sympathy

Alan was a good man with an easy smile. He was an enthusiastic listener, and truly cared about others. I always felt happier after speaking with him.

Allan and my husband Tom Tapman were cousins, but they shared much more than family ties. Their lives took similar paths with military careers. In retirement they were special e-mail buddies and shared a great laugh when they both made it to their 82nd birthdays. I know what a remarkable man Allan was, what a greaty blessing to you children and grandchildren to have such a great role model and enjoy the love and support he provided to his family. I am so very sorry for your loss and pray that you find comfort and peace
in fond memories of special times spent with him. He lives on in you and I know that you will continue to make him proud of you. My love to each of you, Charlene Tapman

I will always fondly remember my cousin Al. When we were both in service in Viet Nam, he with the Army and I with the Navy, we were able to meet up at the MACV Air Base in Saigon and visit. He later got a jeep and took me for a steak dinner at the Officer's club there. It was a special time for me and I know he got a kick out of it too.

I'm so thankful that my mom and I were able to visit he and Lisa in July of 2014 and reminisce. What a truly great man and role model he was. I am so sorry to hear the news and my love and condolences go out to the Little family. (1st. cousin, once removed....Ron L. Hooper, Saginaw, Texas)

I had the honor of meeting and getting to know Colonel Little over the last five years -- and he was one of the most impactful people I've ever met: a gentleman, a scholar, a leader of men. I will always remember him and am honored to be able to call him my grandfather-in-law.
