Just heard from my old friend Wayne Briscoe that Al had passed. I remember well pondering philosophical/theological questions with Al in the early 70's. He was a thinker and a darn good football receiver too (I remember trying fruitlessly to cover him in flag football). I had hoped we would catch up one day as I hadn't seen him or Maryann in decades. Maryann I know these are hard days for you right now. With my deepest sympathies,

I lived with Al in Leduc for awhile before he got married. He was a great person and roommate. Anyone could see he really loved God, and always had serious intent in his Christianity. I loved attending our prayer meetings and bible studies that Al held. Our paths never really crossed again after that, except recently before his passing we made contact, and I was looking forward to meeting with him again. Here was his message to me:
"Great to hear from you Eddy. It has been a long time. I am still working with YWAM. Great to hear some of the things that you are doing over all these years. I usually get up to northern California once a year to teach with YWAM there. It would be so good to have a coffee with you sometime. All the best to you and your family."

It was 1971 & I was 18, and Al and a friend came to our church youth group in my home town of Edmonton, Alberta. When Al shared the gospel, I immediately related. The hope of a Jesus who wanted all or nothing, in following Him was something Al did not just talk about he lived it, as we got to know in the months and years following that small event.
The protection of God was made real when my twin brother Carl and Al were in our VW bug and had a major roll over accident, & crawled out a window with just cuts and bruises on Hwy 2 south of Edmonton. Al continued in faithful service to our King Jesus!
My condolences to Maryann and family, may Jesus comfort and console you like only He can.

I have know Al since the 1970s, when there was a revival at Sylvan Lake Baptist Camp. We lived together for years at 106 Corinthia Drive in Leduc, both serving God at the One Way Agape Club at the University of Alberta (we were both leaders at the club). We both preached the Word on CJOI Radio, Wetaskiwin.
Al was always humble, always loving, always totally devoted to God. There was not one single time when Al lost his enthusiasm and deep commitment to God's Word.
Al is deeply missed, the truth is we could thousands of leaders like him. Looking forward to some day (not today) seeing Al in heaven.

It's impossible to sum up my thoughts and memories of Al in a few words. His "passing" is still quite surreal. We had so much fun together.. So many good times.. Al was always very kind, and full of grace, and that is just about the best thing you can say about someone. For those who are grieving the loss of Al, and have ears to hear, I will offer this comfort. In my grieving last week, I was reminded of Phil 3:20.
"For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;" [NASB-Al's preferred translation]
As a citizen of heaven, I can enter anytime. The Holy Spirit invited me to join the worship service, say hi and give Al a hug. Through the tears, I did just that and was truly, and joyfully comforted. I believe this is how )in this dispensation) we grieve "with hope." I do not deny the physical reality, but I'm not confined by it. I am invited to grieve "from" heaven. I pray for those who grieve Al, that you will be truly comforted by The Holy Spirit. I love Al so much. Thanks be to God this love is not in the past tense. See you in a bit, my dear friend. All my love to Maryann and Al's beloved sons and daughter..

I've known Al for over 46 years. We stated ministering together in our teens in camps, bible studies and out reaches to small towns in Alberta. It was through these events that Al honed his teaching skills which he continued to develop in his many years with YWAM. Al had a competitive nature which surfaced not in sports but also in challenging people in their thinking about God and to bring them to a place of understanding and loving God like they never had before. I enjoyed the times we were able to pick up and throw a football around. Now Al is playing on the heavenly football team in the presence of the Lord he loved and served. My prayers are with you Maryann and family as you grieve his loss.

Summer of 1970, Sylvan Lake Camp, I met Al and over the years what an influence he had on my faith and understanding of our amazing God. Al had a hunger for God and His word and God used Al to make it all real. In Al, we saw Jesus, and we loved him...and this will continue. Peace Maryann.

Al invited me to an off-the-program prayer meeting at a teenage camp where I met a God who enjoyed conversational prayer and answered in minutes -- I have been hooked ever since. Later, he walked me through a faith crisis with compassion and intelligence that taught me to love God with all my heart and mind. I grieve the loss of a mentor/friend who opened the world of rigorous thought and pursuit of wonderful mysteries that now he's meeting face to Face. He also pursued victory on the racquetball court so recklessly I feared for his life. All fear is gone and he's enjoying the ultimate victory now.

Gone, but not forgotten. We grieve, but not as those without hope. I am thankful for sitting under his teaching ministry in the past and share in his ideas and heart.

My heart is saddened that II won't be able to attend the celebration of Al's life. However, I wanted the family to know that I am profoundly grateful for Al's kindness and compassion as my leader and friend during the 90s. I will fondly remember his love for Swiss Chalet and Toberlone. Maryann and family, I will be praying for you all as you grieve his loss.

Al would not remember me, or know me, but he had a huge impact on my life and my faith. I was just a 14 or 15 year old kid going to Tuesday night bible study led by Al at Central Baptist Church back in the '70's and he laid the bedrock foundation for my faith. What a godly man. Loved his smile and his easy laugh. See you later, Al!

Al was a legend! I first met him when he spoke in my SOE for 2 weeks in Tyler nearly 30 years ago. It took the best part of the next 3 years to get my head around the deep theology that he imparted! After I moved to Canada to work with YWAM, I had the pleasure of running into him on occasions. He even came to teach a number of times at our schools in Victoria. I miss him and I'm sure that his family does too. Love to you all.

Al and I were friends for 47 years. We worked together, laughed together, debated theology, philosophy, sports and politics. Debbie and I are deeply saddened by his passing. There is a big hole in our heart because Al is no longer with us. Maryann, we love you and daily pray for you and your family.
