Allan Redfern Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 27, 2025.
Allan R Redfern, 76, of Saunderstown died May 2 after a valiant battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He never gave up and never let Lewy take over. Allan's spirit was always there and always fighting this terrible disease.

A citizen of the world, he lived a life defined by doing new things. While most people say, 'wouldn't it be cool to...?', Allan went and did it. He worked for the Swiss rail system, was a Distributive Education teacher at Westerly High School for over a decade, drove tour buses, owned Pal's General Store in Misquamicut and the Zermatt Inn in New Hampshire for which he did all the cooking. He sold financial securities, for which he wore a new tie every day and got weekly manicures. (Those who knew Allan know he lived life in shorts, a t-shirt and no shoes). He backpacked around the world for a year with his former wife Susan and another couple. He co-owned the original incarnation of Morning Star Nursery and was the 'hydrangea expert', including discovering a new variation which he named Shady Character. His list of occupations was nearly endless.

He was a valued volunteer for WaterFire since 1996 and was instrumental in bringing WaterFire to the world. He traveled to Singapore, Rome, Kansas City, MO, Columbus, OH, and a little town in Western Pennsylvania called Sharon where his kind and quiet leadership helped to transform a dying steel town into a destination to visit.

Allan lived his life with curiosity, kindness, and wonder. He set down some of his adventures in his book, Beyond Borders: Short Stories of a Long Life. But for those who knew and loved him, his life wasn't nearly long enough.

He is survived by his long-time partner Marita Stapleton with whom he traveled the world and shared a love of reading, crabbing and relaxing on the shores of Lake Pettaquamscutt. He also leaves behind his friend of 50+ years Norman Langlois, and his former wife Sue Redfern, as well as his nephew Christopher Alexander of CA and his partner, niece Mary Catherine Burke of NY and her family, and Allan Alexander of TX and his family. He was pre-deceased by his parents Alden and Hermine Redfern and sister, Janice Ann Alexander.

The first law of Thermodynamics states energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Allan's energy continues to pulse through the universe and in all of those he leaves behind. We are all better human beings because of it. A celebration of life will be held this summer.

Allan my life long next door neighbor. We had a friendship that spanned decades in a way that sadly our parents were not able to achieve. You were always so kind with my children. We so enjoyed hearing about your adventures and visiting Morning Star to seek your advice. Your involvement with the neighborhood was a labor of love. I spent the Spring next door during a remodeling the family home and I looked for you but had also heard that you were ill. Allan you will be missed the place just will not be the same without you. OLLI writing group isn't the same without Allan. Who else ever had crickets wake up in the skillet and hop all over the kitchen -- or woke up himself because a great blue heron landed on his face? We miss him.

My friend and my partner in Morningstar Nurseries. Together we built something to be proud of. Lots of hard work with plenty of laughs and good times along the way. I couldn´t have done it without you. I can´t thank you enough. You will be missed by me and the many people in our industry that were your friends. May your hydrangeas always be blue my friend. Rest in peace

Allan was a great guy. He subbed for me many times at NHS ,his knowledge and unique life stories always kept the kids engaged. His help with our plant selection for the annual landscape competition was always inspiring. The best story was Allan´s Jeopardy experience being thought by his friends to be a true genius but the mischievous Allan had a different reason for knowing all the answers. Rest in Peace.

Allan was the brother I never had. I thank him for that. He may have passed on, but he will always be with me and with everyone else who's life he touched (and there were so many). Rest in peace my friend.

I worked with Allan at Blue Moon farm. We all knew it would be a fun, informative and interesting day when we saw him drive in. His gentle, kind nature was a highlight of our day and always welcome. Rest in Peace my friend. You will be truly missed by many.

My deepest sympathy to his friends and family. Allen was a God send to our little community of Sharon PA. He came and he helped us present a beautiful WaterFire. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word to everyone.

Allan gave everyone he met his undivided attention. His high school students absolutely loved his classes and learned more than most about running a business which he both taught and practiced. Allan was our best buddy for more than fifty years.
I loved cooking with Allan and for many winters we tackled a couple of recipes from Julia Child's "The Art of French Cooking." We spent a summer on his property in our camper. We had great fun driving to Hilton Head together with Marita and Allan. What seemed ordinary to most, Allan found interesting. He inspired us to make and drink wine using my grandfather's press for many years and we laughed a lot. He was a buddy to both my Jimi and my brother Albert. We drove across the country and literally traveled around the world. With Allan adventure was not to be denied. Our kids call him Uncle Allan.
