I met Gordon freshman year at Kenyon College and was struck by how he always took the time to engage with me and others. This is a simple thing, but rare and inspiring for me to this day. God bless Gordon.

I lived across the hall from Gordon my freshman year at Kenyon. He was a great person, full of humor and always friendly: a true prince.

I cleaned for Gordon's parents in Woodlands for many years. I always enjoyed myself and playing pranks on Gordon. He tried to pull one on me a couple of times, just could not out do me. Once I bought a fake mouse and put it in his bed way at the bottom and he told me the next time I saw him I pulled a good one, guess it really scared him. I also pranked him in wal-mart once and he never knew it. When he wasn't looking I put some feminine hygiene and ladies panties in his cart, watched him check out and laughed because he didn't even notice. Rest in Peace my friend I will miss you.

I am so sorry - I took care of Gordon's dad. Paul, through the last few months of his life and shared a week with them in Dunkirk. Gordon was a faithful son. Cathy

Gordon will truly be missed by his squash friends across the country. He enjoyed traveling to many tournaments as well as hosting tournaments in Pittsburgh such as the Knox Cup between Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. He always looked up to his friend and squash mentor Treddy Ketchum and thus became President of the U.S.Jesters Club.I am going to truly miss our bi monthly telephone conversations about all the interesting characters i the squash game.May he rest in peace and live next door to Treddy.

Gordon was our next door neighbor on Woodlands for 12 years. His smile would brighten anyone's day. Many happy memories of when we had my nieces Sara & Brittany out for a sleepover along with Courtney and Madeline....Gordon would bring over candy bags from Andy's for the kids. A great water and dog lover. We have Gordon to thank for pushing us in getting Chesapeake Bay Retriever over a Spaniel. Always took interest in what we had to say EXCEPT when my husband Bill talked about Racquet Ball. Nothing compared to Squash!!! Allison, Paul, Courtney and Madeline....we are so sorry for your loss. Keep your memories alive....Jane & Bill Ploetz

We will truly miss Gordon at Woodlands in Dunkirk. In fact Woodlands will never be the same. Gordon was a great friend and neighbor. He always shared a smile when we met. He would inquire about my well being and that of my family and the other neighbors
Thank you Gordon for the many laughs and wonderful times throughout the years.

As one of his many friends in the Dunkirk and Fredonia area I can say for sure that he will be missed by his "family" here. Gordon and I shared many laughs together at Bob Boorady's little store in Van Buren on Lake Erie. Great memories that will last forever.

Gordon's reputation as a loyal friend with a quick wit and ready smile preceded my meeting him. I remember meeting him in his early adult life and his genuine love of a life filled with good friends, good times and a good backhand were evident immediately i remember admiring his choice to go into independent school teaching I spent nearly 20 years in the field - none of them easy but fulfilling as a single professional also always with a dog - and a good way to have an extended gily and community I lost touch in recent years but have always thought kindly and well of him. My heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues over the years.

When Gordon was a little boy, I thought, "What a shame that beauty has to go through an awkward age," but it never did. Gordon was always beautiful: within and without. Despite what anyone can say about what he could have done with his life or what he should have done with his life, the fact remains that he did what most of us could never do: he never said a bad word about anyone. Every week, the voice on my phone would begin with..."Wait til you hear this..." and the enthusiasm would continue for nigh onto a hour. His "ups" he shared with us; his "downs" he hid within himself. He is yet another Steele I will miss forever.

I don't think I ever saw you without a smile on your face! Everyone gravitated to you because you were funny, fun to be with and kind. And your "laugh backs" were the best! I will miss you.

Gordon and I went to Outward Bound together on Burnt Island, in Maine in 1978. We had been good friends ever since. Gordon came to Kenyon after he had listened to me tell him for the 1978-1979 year what a great place it was. We were close friends during our Kenyon years although he was very busy with lots of hilarious antics with his fraternnity brothers. I moved to Oregon in 1981 to finish a BFA and MFA in Photography at the University of Oregon.Through the years we always kept in touch.Gordon was in my wedding in 1987. More recently he is my son, Alexander's, Godfather.
Gordon always had a positive outlook. He loved practical jokes - had a great sense of humor. He was a great teacher and coach. He was an accomplished squash player and loved the Jesters. As a dog lover he was a big Chesapeake Bay Retriever fan and had at least one of this breed his whole adult life; Morris Titanic being his current canine companion. He loved "the lake" and had for all intersive purposes had made Dunkirk his home.
He was a caring and thoughtful friend. We shared a lot of good laughs. There is nothing like close friends you have known for so many decades.I will miss him dearly.
