Alma Akin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 26, 2008.
Alma Simpson Akin died Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 12:56 p.m. as a result of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. She was in her eighty eighth year.  A resident of Tucker Georgia, she was born November 9, 1920, to Homer Andrew and Lula Weems Simpson, in Clarkston, Georgia. She was the sixth of seven children.

A widow for twenty-four years she is preceded in death by her husband, George Russell Akin and daughters Susan Elaine and Kathleen Alma Akin.

In addition to a large, but local, family of Weems, Akins, and Fraziers, Alma's life was spent in close association with her siblings and their spouses. With her passing, only two sisters remain; Margaret Mann of McDonough and Mary Francis Allgood, of Tucker.

A resident of Oak Grove in Dekalb County since the 1940s, and a member of Oak Grove Untied Methodist Church, Alma lived in a home built by her husband and her brother-in-law, Carl Akin. In 1999 she moved to a house in Tucker requiring less maintenance.

A detailed list of achievements and travels will not be provided. Alma did not like to draw attention to herself and would have preferred to have silently passed without an obituary or a funeral service. She exhibited the characteristic common to her generation; thrift, industry, and self reliance. She was a nurturer. This is her legacy.

For the past four years Bethany Tabitha Lee, her granddaughter-in-law, was her primary caretaker (Bethany told me not to include this but she is getting over ruled. Marrying her was the best thing I've done for the family. Just ask them.). In addition to Bethany, Alma leaves behind her grandson, Matthew Russell Lee, step-granddaughter Melissa Colatosti, and great-grandsons Nathan Russell and Talmage Joseph Lee all of Tucker.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 28, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at the A.S. Turner and Sons chapel Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Alma will be interred at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
