Alpha Jo Scott Luallen, 80, passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018 at home surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late James Haley Scott and Ely Alpha Bassham Scott. Alpha Jo grew up in Columbia, Tennessee where she graduated from Columbia High School in 1956. She attended Transylvania University where she was crowned Miss Transylvania in 1960. Alpha Jo was named to the Transylvania Hall of Fame in 2006. After earning a B.A. she began her teaching career at Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1967 she moved to Owensboro and served for a time as Director of the Help Office. She then resumed her teaching career at Daviess County High School. During this time she spent many hours on the road between here and Bowling Green while earning her master's degree at Western Kentucky University. She was a pioneer in every sense of the word, helping to establish the first girls' basketball program at DCHS while teaching health and P.E. She went on to become the P.E. Department Head and served on the Site Based Council before her retirement in 1999. Alpha Jo was a lifelong member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Her activities at First Christian included serving as a deacon and elder, teaching Sunday school for 30 years with the Fa Ho Lo Class, flower ministry, youth group leadership, being a camp counselor and serving Habitat for Humanity as a caulker extraordinaire. She was a true servant but also a versatile athlete, doo-dadder, bridge player, story-teller, crossword puzzler and doodler, refinisher, gardener, painter, upholsterer, wall-paperer, fixer-upper, problem solver, master of many trades, avid reader, skilled ping-pong player, conversationalist, collector of precious things, painter of rocks and a creator of fun games. Alpha Jo never met a stranger, was a friend to countless folks and an honorary parent and grandparent to many. She is survived by three children, Joseph Scott Luallen (Amber) of Lexington, Mary Lynne Luallen Roach (Ronnie) of Owensboro and James Phillip Luallen of Lexington; grandchildren, Phillip Luallen, Wesley Roach, Embry Luallen, Elee Roach, Alex Luallen, Ben Luallen and Lola Luallen; a sister, Mary Haylee Hancock of Madisonville; a nephew, Chad Hancock; a niece, Haylee Jo Hancock Coberly; and a dear friend and neighbor of 47 years, Pat Risch. Expressions of love and sympathy may take the form of donations to Disciples Women's Ministry, Camp Kum Ba Ya or the Luke Woodward Memorial Fund, all three in care of First Christian Church. Donations may also be made to Help Office of Owensboro or Habitat for Humanity. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, November 4th at First Christian Church. Alpha Jo was one of those special friends in days at Central High School in Columbia. TN. We have not had contact in many years but have so many special memories of days long past. Enjoyed reading of the extensive list of things she had done and ways she has served others. Of these, I am not surprised. She was a special person.

Coach Luallen had a wonderful influence on my life, she was a true Pioneer (Transylvania) I was supposed to see her the day she died and I always be sorry I didn't get that opportunity, just to thank her again for all she did for me and how much it meant. She not only taught me basketball but she showed me what a strong
Independent, loving woman looked like. She started the girls basketball program and raised a family and paved the way for women who could do and have it all! I wish the world had more people like her, she will always be remembered in our hearts with love, Janet Mattingly

Dear Mary Lynne, Scott and JP, I'm so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. She was such an amazing lady. She is a part of so many cherished memories from my childhood. FCC won't be the same without her. I hope she received my card last week. I wanted her to know how much she had touched my life. I remember when I was first told that your Mom was having health issues back in August. I would have never thought she would be gone so soon. I know that she was a vital part of your family and will be terribly missed by so many people. It has to make you smile that she spent her life touching so many with her love, compassion and warmth. What a wonderful woman she was and what a legacy she created! My heart goes out to you, Marylynn, and to all who were graced with her presence. From what I know about your Mom and from reading all of these nice words from people that she touched, I can honestly say she was very well thought of and her life really mattered and made a difference in the 80 years she had on this earth. God bless everyone that knew and loved this amazing woman.

To the family and friends of this dear lady I know you are very sad. She was a wonderful soul that God shared with me while in high school. A true friend she became! Was very blessed to touch base with each other through the years. I can still hear that sweet laugh of hers! Her photo says it all! She shared smiles along her journey! I loved being the manager for the basketball team! She loved the team and put her heart and soul into each one. I'm going to miss you for awhile! See you soon , sweet lady!!

Dear Mary Lynn,
I already miss your mom. I know you do too. She was a good, sweet, fun soul. Her beautiful spirit made all want to be near her. I loved watching her teach Sunday School. It amazed me to see her stand up to teach the entire class period.
You, your brothers, and the rest of your family are in my prayers.
With sympathy and love,
Mary Cox Yerington
